Lipa Schmeltzer is going to israel to be at Sharon's bed side, they want him to sing "A Bi MeLeibt"
Gabbe
And we care why?
I don't like him anymore.
Aishes Ish
"A Kapureh" would be more fitting.
Spot
is lipa a yiddish name?
Gabbe
Yes. And since we need Yiddish to spell Lipa, we need Yiddish period.
QED.
Spot
what does it mean?
Gabbe
You'd have to ask Shmilik.
accolade
Who needs him? Lipa is a nickname for Eliezer or Elazar. Or that's its origin, at least.
Spot
huh? that's creative.... how'd you get from Eliezer or Elazar to lipa?

I didn't, but other people did. There are many, many names like that. Naturally, I can think of none at the moment.

acutally Lipa is 99% of the time preceded by chananya yom tov - i.e. chananya yomtov Lipa.
Aishes Ish
The Tosfos Yom Tov's name was Lipa
Gabbe
I noticed that too. Like Freund.

Gabbe
I won't tell if you don't.

And I've seen "Eliezer Lipa"s.

Is that the basis for saying one comes from the other? Because if so, it's not very good.

No, the basis was actually a web page I found - the only one that discussed the origin of Lipa as a first name. Not very sound, agreed. But no one's come up with anything better.

Just got this, i don't know if it's new stuff or you have seen it already.

Lipa singing for the "Nachal Charedi" in israel.

Oy vay! is he now an official Zionist, will this get the Kanoisdig Chasidisher Frum crowd to be even more mad on him, after they were already upset on him just for his style of music and singing.

On the other had, myabe this was just a retaliation from him, after the Hisachdos Horabonim recently published an issur on his latest Album Keinehora.

Go figure.

Lippmann, not Lipa. Lipa is a Yiddish name derived from the diminutive of Lippmann.
ruthie
My dad's second name is Lipa in hebrew and Lippman in English, what is Lippman? I always thought it to be an odd name.
artscroll
It's an Old Yiddish name, derived, I think, from German Liebmann.
