Hi, I'm about to be of legal age and I am interested in making aliyah. The problem is, I tried looking for information and all the details but I could not find a lot and I still have a few questions.

1. Does the government pay for my university studies?
2. If I serve in the IDF, do I HAVE to fight or are there other options?
3. What are my benefits/rights as an Oleh?

Thanks
Masorti

You may want to refer to Nefesh B'Nefesh's page on student aliyah. I believe your other questions can also be answered on their site. They are updating it right now, so some portions of the website may be unavailable - keep checking!

if you serve in the army, (wich you might not be accepted into) you do have the option of not fighting and instead working into intelligence.

i know that you dont have to pay full ammount of tax and also receive a basket of money and a voucher to any ulpan ( providing it isnt private)

we made aliyah about 6 months ago, what made you decide to?

about university, the way that it has been, but check to make sure, is that you have one degree that they will pay for.
IDF question - i dont know as i am female, but makke sure that you are qualified to go into the army, they dont take every single Oleh.
about your benifits, that you can talk to someone in the ministry of absorption.

there are many different places that can help you.
there is:

www.nefeshbnefesh.com (nefesh b'nefesh)
www.moia.gov.il/english/index_en.asp (ministry of absorption)
www.aaci.org.il (association of americans and canadians in israel)
www.tehilla.com (tehilla)

those are the ones that i can think of for now.
if you have any more questions, feel free to PM me. i made aliyah three years ago by myself and went through a lot of the "red tape" beaurocracy.

GOOD LUCK!!!!!

A few more general questions....

1. What is the minimum wage in Israel?
2. Is it easy to find a part-time job? Is it a problem if my hebrew is not very good?
3. How many Shekels should I expect to pay for a university dorm/rent?
4. What's the best way to prepare for a psychometric exam?

the minimum wage in israel is 20 skeckels, and you can expect to be payed that for most jobs over here.
if your hebrew isnt that great you could always have a part time job in a english call centre, theres loads over here.

im not sure about the last two though

Hi, b'hatzlacha.

First, about the army. Like any other army they consider your requests but don't promise. I really don't see someone with no Hebrew or Arabic going into intelligence. Everybody does guard duty. My son is in the rabbanut and he does his time at the shin gimmel. Everyone gets a gun. To not fight you have to be a "jobnik". You can be a driver, pencil pusher (also difficult w/o Hebrew) or try to get a job somewhere else. Cook, training base, supply unit, technician, etc. There are careers the army will train you for that are decent civilian professions. there is also a program, difficult to get into called atuda. Sort of a secular yeshivat chesder. The army pays your university (if you are outstanding) and you commit 5 years to the army. You're chance of seeing real action decreases w/age and no. of children unless you are career military. The IDF also has a website.

In the Nachal Charedi (bonus - only 2 yrs and then they will totally pay for one year of schooling) men also do the make work jobs done by girls else where. The army is also training male social workers, teachers, etc. to replace the women who do this in other units. If you are not Charedi, don't worry, neither are most of the other soldiers in the Nachal Charedi. They also have been wonderful to the chayal boded. This will be your status if you come w/o family. The army gives you a rent subsidy to maintain your own place if you don't have family to go home to, There are other benefits to the chayal boded as well.

Prices of dorm are more or less standard. Whether rent is cheaper depends on where. If you want to study in Gush Dan (TA Univ, Bar Ilan) or Yerushalayim rent will be exorbitant unless shared w/other guys. If you go to Univ of Beer Sheva or a local college in a development area rent will be cheaper.

A lot of kids take a course to pass the psychometric. Many good schools and colleges won't take you w/less than a 500. There has been a move to do away with this idiotic test but test passing schools are big business so I don't see it in the near future. You can also buy a book in Steimatzky and learn on your own.

I thought that Atuda was the program through which you were allowed to go to university (by your own means, I guess) and then serve regular service in the army,

http://www.hagshama.org.il/en/resources/view.asp?id=94

Thanks a lot to everyone for replying
Masorti

EDIT: I read now that Atuda is like you said for Israelis but like I said for Olim (Which later become Israelis, lol?). As you have seen above, I love asking questions, so I'll keep the crazy train rolling

It says on the site that I posted above that you have to present to the army a letter of acceptance into a University, etc. But what happens if you get to Israel and you have to wait until the psychometric test but the army contacts you before that? you just tell them to wait?
thanks again!
Rikal
Atuda, at least where they pay, is extremely hard to get into. Then if you try don't make it and don't have protectzia the army will put you where they feel like.

As I type this I'm looking at a 200 gram jar of Nescafe "Red Mug" with a nice yellow sticker on in that says "19.90"...
Rikal
Coffee, if you are not me, is a small amt of your expenses. In Britain how much do you pay for rent? The highest rent in my yishuv (pvt house, 3 BR is 900 NIS - $200). Even in Y-m you can rent for far under $1,000. Most mortgages are also less than that.

The end all do all of savings: Can you send your child to a good Jewish dayschool for $50-100/mo.?
NY-LON
Trust me, in Britain you pay FAR more for rent!!
Schooling here isn't so expensive though as many Jewish schools are state subsidised; you only pay for LK, under £1,000 a year and they can't even make you pay it as compulsory charges are illegal.

In Britain you pay more rent, you pay more taxes, but you get much more benefits. It works both ways...

Finding a rental for less than $1000 a month is not at all inexpensive in Israel.
Many Israelis only take home $1000 a month.
