QUOTE
The Free File program is a free federal tax preparation and electronic filing program for eligible taxpayers developed through a partnership between the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the Free File Alliance LLC, a group of private sector tax software companies. Since Free File’s debut in 2003, more than 15.4 million returns have been prepared and e-filed through the program.

Free File allows taxpayers with an Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) of $52,000 or less in 2006 to e-file their federal tax returns for free. That means 70 percent of all taxpayers – 95 million taxpayers – can take advantage of the Free File program.

I didn't see anything there about overseas filers one way or the other (no big deal, I don't think the stamp will break my budget), but I noticed that the filing isn't done directly thru the IRS, but thru private companies. It seems the feature won't be available until Jan 16th, but I'm wondering what companies do this, and what's in it for them (are they hoping to attract future business this way)?

h&r block is one of them - when i used the free file program in the past, that was the private company i went through. i have no idea what they get out of it, except an opportunity to send me all kinds of advertisement emails the rest of the year. it's also just the federal filing that's free - they try to reel you in to pay for the state filing during the process. could be enough people fall for it to make it worth the company's while

I know tax season is over, but e-filing through H & R Block is not free, I paid $31.90 to e-file my taxes through H & R.

Any reason you didn't print it out from the H&R software and stick it in an envelope with 39 cents to save $31.51?

Yes, I want to get my refund faster, and don't want to have to wait for the US postal service.

Where do you find the IRS freefile portal? It's too late for this year, but at least I'll know for next year. Did you use the H&R TaxCut software?

Yes, you're right, H & R is listed in there...darn, I wish I knew about this sooner, would have saved me the 30 bucks. I used the H & R software, the one that you have to buy in the store, then used the program to e-file it (never went to the IRS website, the program automatically sent it to the IRS). I didn't find out until I was finished with the program that it was going to charge for my e-filing, and by that point, I had already spent hours working on it, and was not going to redo the information on the IRS website to get it for free (I knew you could do it for free on the IRS website, but I didn't know that they had H & R's program on there too).
