Can anyone give me an example of a cost driver for something like R&D or marketing and advertising or any other non-traceable cost? (assume those examples are non-traceable even though it may not be the case)

More specifically I need to allocate these costs to a product line or service. The traditional method just divides among the products based on volume, I need to allocate it differently so that the cost of the product more accurately reflects the true cost. IOW I need a tangible number to divide the cost pool other than volume.
