is buffet the same as refreshments or something more substantial?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buffet

It should mean something more substantial. Sometimes they are intended to serve as an entire meal.

Other times a buffet is just meant as an appetizer (at receptions before fancy sit-down dinners) or as a salty snack (spicy chicken wings, etc.) to make people thirsty so they'll buy more alcoholic drinks (at bars).

Obviously, it also depends how many people are going to be there and how much food is ordered. So I wouldn't necessarily expect a full and substantial meal. But it should be more substantial than "refreshments." Perhaps K_Rebbe will attend?

It's too bad that you live such a tremendous distance from Qveens, and are too aged to travel, but I imagine that there are similar learning opportunities in Brooklyn?

Yes. Does anyone know what happened to Shalhevet? I've seen no ads this year.

That's different. They don't have to stay for any learning.

I would go and hear Paysach Krohn even without free eats. I think I have even paid admission to hear him.... It's worth every penny and he is a gevaldeke mentch (I wonder if he still remembers me)...
Elana
again sushi? what kind of a cool place is that?

and, yeah, Pesach Krohn is a good speaker

i actually asked for your benefit, so that your mother would be happy to hear you had a normal supper there, not just whatever there was at a previous lecture wink.gif

there definitely are.

sushi is tonight, at the lecture about dating and marriage - post#5
Kalashnikover_Rebbe
Ironic, I recently went on a date and one of the few things we saw eye to eye on is that this whole Sushi trend is out of hand......
Elana
what sushi trend?
Kalashnikover_Rebbe
QUOTE(Elana @ Aug 23 2007, 04:00 PM) *
what sushi trend?

Well it is no coincidence that it is being used as a draw to get people to come to shiurim. And anyone today that doesn't have a sushi bar at a simcha is immediately placed on the black list......
Elana
so are any refreshments/buffet - used to draw people to come to shiurim. cause it's food and free.

i definitely see some sushi fad around, cause a few years ago i had no idea what it was, and even less so tasted it, but i don't think it's overdone. many people like it, it's considered fancy to have it at the simcha (i haven't been to any that have it, btw)

I would go off on a tirade about the gross materialism and superficiality that has infiltrated and is pervasive in the frum world today, but I really don't have koach and I doubt anyone wants to hear it.......

Do people like it because it tastes good, or because liking it is a sign of being "cultured"?

i wouldn't know. i surely hope the former, but i'm sure there are the latter cases, so they would be the perfect candidates for listening to KR's tirade.

for the record - i'm not even crazy in love with sushi. i'll eat it if i'm served (at the parties), but i ordered it only once in my life, and that was a few years ago when i tasted it fr the first time cause was curious to taste it (didn't like it that first time, btw)

Is that from whitefish? I don't know how many type of kosher caviar there are.

I know that the sturgeon caviar is considered treif.

Did K_Rebbe really say he was going? He said that he "would go," but that could mean, "I would go, if I didn't have a date with a beautiful girl on Sunday night," or, "I would go, if I weren't learning Torah with Melech at that time," etc.

But if you're really lucky, maybe you'll see me there. You could even introduce yourself it you wanted to.

Naturally, no one introduced themselves to me. I see a trend...

I didn't see K_Rebbe's 7:20 post before I left, so I saw a big guy there with a full beard, sitting in the center section behind the central bima, but since he had no peyot, I didn't think it was him and didn't see any need to ask if he was K_Rebbe. And I didn't see Sle123, and didn't think Bombastic was coming (or feel a need to ask the hundreds of girls there if any of them was Bombastic) -- I would expect strange looks if I approached strangers and asked, "Are you K_Rebbe," or "Are you Bombastic." Wheras I think it wouldn't be that painful for people to spot me or to ask, "Are you Bezalel." But NOOOOO!

I left Kew Gardens Hills around 7:25, on foot, and got there around 7:55. I enjoyed the buffet, then found a seat on the left side, toward the front, and stayed until after ma'ariv. [I was surprised that there were some women wandering around in the shul after the guys started ma'ariv. There was even one girl standing in the back, on the right side, davening. In an Ashkenazi shul someone probably would have stoned her, or built a mechitza around her.] I then hiked back to KGH.

The speech was great, as always. I was also very impressed that Rabbi Yehoshua, in his brief introduction, focused on the fact that some people need shidduchim, and that Rabbi Krohn also mentioned that. Is that a problem in the Bukharan community? In KGH, I feel that I'm completely forgotten: whichever shul I go into, everyone's married, including a lot of people who look like they're 12 years old. I wonder if Rabbi Yehoshua knows any older women; maybe I should drop him a note.
