Is downloading really against the law?

Yes, but it is NOT "stealing" and the penalties are civil not criminal.....

If you steal someone's car or DVD they no longer own it, and have suffered a real loss and now have less assets than they did previously. Someone who downloads a pirated movie causes a HYPOTHETICAL loss of PROFIT for the company in the event that the person in question would have actually purchased the item in question instead of downloading it but no ACTUAL loss to the "victim"... Not nice, maybe not legal, but also clearly NOT "stealing"

And it's not even SO clear that DOWNLOADING movies is illegal, as long as you are not wrongfully SHARING copyrighted material with others. I think (although I could be mistaken) so far the RIAA/MPAA gestapo has only gone after people caught SHARING, not merely downloading.

Can't be. It's good for the environment.
