i've recently joined the petit bourgeoisie and now i need my home to look the part. the headboard+dresser+nightstand combination from all four sets are about the same price. which should i buy and why?

corbin

retro

northern lights

lifestyle
Nechama
Not the Corbin because it looks too much like something from Ikea, and I think the set looks a bit dated.
I think the style of the "Lifestyle" is the most classic of all the sets if you are looking long-term.
The Retro Collection is very now, especially the headboard. However, if you read or watch TV in bed its not going to be comfortable. Other than that, the set doesnt have much personality.
The Northern Lights seems silimar to the Retro, but has much nicer lines, accents and the wood stain is much nicer.

So I vote for Northern Lights or Lifestyle, depending if your other belongings are trendy/eclectic or Pottery barn.
Pinchas
I voted Retro.

I did like Corbin but didn't think it was "you."

The last two are yuck.

imho lifestyle is the nicest set hands down, it has a very classic style.

I like Retro by far the best, with Northern Lights in second.....

My favorites are lifestyle and retro. They're both classy and unique at the same time. smile.gif
Hmm...
but my top vote goes to lifestyle. smile.gif

Btw, I really have no clue when it comes to furniture. My bedding is just comfy and colorful...unsure.gif

one additional point to take into consideration - the retro and lifestyle sets, if chosen, would most likely be in the "dark cherry" finish.

I swear I was just fixing to suggest that.

I'm a four-poster freak so I would probably choose Lifestyle; however, I love the platform bases on northern lights as well as the door vs. drawer chest, which would coordinate with the full/queen foot board. Retro seems a cross between an oriental and american design which, for the most part, failed. I like the high headboard on corbin but don't like the lack of footboard. Additionally, unless you really like getting under your furniture to sweep, etc., I dislike the legs tremendously (which is why I like the platform style). They're just stubs looking for a toe in the middle of the night.
Elana
retro or northern lights. Ahavati makes a good point about legs vs platform

i love dark cherry finish - that's what i have smile.gif

sorry, but that canopy bed in the lifestyle looks very ... weird.

may i ask what is so high class about these sets? or it's the companies?

actually, they're all pretty mid-range. high class isn't my style.

Ditto, I like northern lights, the wood looks very rich. I like Retro too, but it depends on how modern the rest of your decor is. Northern Lights is super classy.

there is no rest of my decor yet. it's all a tabula rasa...

what a golden opportunity, how often do you get the chance to plan your whole decor from scratch? If I were living the single life, I'd pick retro, so I could decorate with funky, modern, less expensive decor and accent furniture from Ikea, West Elm, etc. If I were investing in furniture for my adult life, I'd go with Northern Lights, since it's the style I see myself using for the long term.

I'm impressed either way, since we don't have headboards, just some shams to make it look like more than just a comforter.

isn't bourgeoisie part synonymous with high class?

i'm considering getting rid of my headboards. i made a huge mistake (out of inexperience) when bought them

i was being a bit facetious. petit-bourgeoisie usually refers to middle-class professionals and/or people who adopt the trappings of upper-classdom (the plain old [non-petit] bourgeoisie are the true upper class).
Elana
oh, i see; thanks

I find this thread very disturbing. Are you going to be picking out dining room sets and china patterns next? I think this conventionality needs to be nipped in the bud rather than giving you validation.

the dining room set is already selected: westwood (thanks to the chat room folks and my mother). maybe i'll hold another poll for the china patterns.

mine too...and the room isn't quite big enough for a canopy bed even if i wanted one. the floor model i looked at (and the print catalog) has a simple panel headboard; for some reason there's no picture of it on the website.

Ahh, then is not quite so bad. But I still think Retro is more... I don't know... classy?

I don't think Mr. Jobs is going to like that his products are now "conventional" by definition.

I can't believe Northern Lights is in the lead.

I'd change my vote to Lifestyle had I known...
