Full Version: What Do You Like To Eat At A Sholom Zochor?

Red Hare
My neighbor had a boy and I want to send something (to serve) for the Sholom Zochor - can't be too potche'dike, and can't cost too much.

I used to send cookie platters with varying kinds of cookies, but I hear men like to eat more chippy type things that go with beer. I was thinking popcorn and perhaps some nut crunch.

So, tell me, what do you like to eat at a Sholom Zochor, to give me an idea of what I could make & send.

What a wonderful topic. Not "What should be served" but "What do you want to eat."

Potato chips?
krumlikeapretzel
Shalom Zachar? cheap?

You can't go wrong with good ol' chickpeas.
melech
19 oz. can of chick peas

mix in a bowl:
1 tbs olive oil
1 tsp chili powder (the original recipe calls for 2 tsps)
1 1/2 tsp each cumin and oregeno
1/4 tsp salt
pinch of pepper

mix it all together, and spread on a foil-lined baking sheet (although I use parchment paper instead of foil because I prefer not to get Alzheimer Disease)
bake at 350 F for 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 hours

[source of the recipe is Canadian Living Magazine]

I don't know about him, but if I knew I was going to a shalom zachor, I'd skip dessert at home.

Yeah, especially if it is quality merchandise... I've never seen leftover cake from an SZ...
And Shabbos is SO early nowadays you can get hungry again before you go to sleep....

Ah, yes, chickpeas, er, yum. Definitely the life of the party whoever shows up with a bowlful of those things.

I find that brownies or cookies go just fine with beer.
sapphire
Truffles.

A cold collation.

In London women go to SZ's unless specified otherwise. They usually sit in the kitchen, where there's a fruit platter or two along with some little cakes that no one touches.

I usually make popping in to SZ's a part of my post Friday night dinner walk with DH.

At my son'd SZ, we had 'chippy' type stuff for the men, and fancier gateaus (sp?) and fruit for the women in the other room. All the men ate was beer, kigel, and pretzels, chips etc, and the women tucked in to the fancy stuff. And believe me, the women ate! They all sat around staring at the food, until someone caved in , then they all fell on the stuff.

Top three foods to be eaten with beer is pretzels, nuts and carrots soaked in vinegar.

Party trick: put out the cake with a piece missing so that the guests don't feel uncomfortable starting.

I, personally, don't like cake or cookies all that much. And I don't drink beer. If I eat there, what I like most are the pb bars, RK
treats.

My real favorite is chulent on Friday night, but that only gets served to the men and even when it is served to women, no one takes so I feel a little odd being the only one to take (so then, if it's served to women, it depends on the crowd)

I am sorry. It was a mistake on my part. I thought I had spelled it out before and was just re-referencing it.
I apologize for any confusion.

I am thinking trays with mini (fruit) muffins, mini (confec sugar) donuts, and mini crumbcakes. I also got two torte regular size pans for cakes with spaces at top for glaced fruit.

I ordered pans for mini pies, cakle on a stick, and shortcakes, but I think I'm gonna return them ....

Lastly, I'm exploring the chocolate pizza option - anyone ?

Sounds good. I am not familiar with chocolate pizza. What is that?
Red Hare
Chocolate pizza is a cookie dough round crust, topped with meltd choc & candies.

I have made fruit salad/veggie platters/popcorn for s.z. before, i just don't find that a challenge.

That sounds interesting, but it doesn't sound like something which would be attractive to adults. Also, my experience is that people tend to eat things which are "easy" to eat. The more complicated something (more icing, needs cutting up, makes a mess, crumbles easily, etc...) the less likely someone is to eat it. Just my experience, though.

I agree. I think people, or at least guys, or at least I, prefer things that are complete units rather than pieces of a larger whole.

That's why cupcakes are always such a big hit.

Oy, vey.

Why is my judgement so often wrong ...
