It's about the Purim story, obviously - I rather liked it, but it was VERY Hollywood'd up - my main kvetches are that it had too many characters, too many actors, and it was over 2 hours long!

Forgive my ignorance, but
. Why would anyone read this book? As compared to the megillah, that is?

I've read a couple of these biblical retelling books. I read another version of Esther (not this one) and it was pretty bad. I read the Ema'ot series by Orson Scott Card and it was pretty good. I read the Red Tent which I thought was awful. And then I kind of got sick of the genre.
When done well, I think these books flesh out the psychology of the stories; they also give a lot of nice period details.

why not? i don't take it as a halachic source or something. it's fiction, based on historical material. even though i usually have a hard time reading historical fiction (cause i can't know what's true and what's not), i enjoyed this book.

it was nice and holywood, i watched it as an amusing movie, wouldn't let my children/students watch it though.
the problem was a few kids in my class had seen it, and said "morah we know the story, and then she had a necklace that showed the king that she was jewish", the girl who said that was 5...
oh well, i set her straight at the end though

I agree. I enjoy the Ann Burton "Women of the bible" books.
