I already have pearls that have sentimental value (they were my grandmother's) so I don't really want to replace them.

Pearls are classy. Especially the slightly pink or green ones. Tahitian pearls especially rock.

I didn't say they weren't classy, I just think young people have a hard time wearing them without making themselves look like old ladies.

i don't like pearls, or the way they look, i think they are too chunky. diamonds that are cut well, are, in my opinion, a lot more tasteful

No, but I won't go to harlem, in lincolns or fords
And I will not dish the dirt, with the rest of those broads

pearls need not be "old lady"
below are two custom necklaces for the same person, designed to be worn both together and apart. She is a VERY fashion forward customer of mine, reasonably well off, always perfectly accesorized.

Well if you're talking about those necklaces, I completely agree with you. A bunch of pearls on a string doesn't seem terribly attractive to me either. But pearl studs can be gorgeous if you get a shade that matches your skin tone and they have certain chokers with designs that are really nice.
ETA: Young people don't look old in anything. It's the forty plus crowd that can't get away with it.

I agree with Bri, pearl studs are very classy and can be dressed up or dressed down, worn every day or to a wedding. Diamonds you can only get away with at a fancy event (besides diamond ring).

Diamonds can be dressed up or down though too.
I have both, but I'd choose diamonds only because I have enough pearl items.
