That was my reaction. Won't it drip? I asked. My roomate explained that by pr1cking you prevent the shell from cracking. As for dripping - it is such a tiny hole it doesn't drip - but it lets the air/steam escape that would otherwise crack the shell and make real yucky eggs.

And it works great. But I had never heard of it. He made it sound like it was common knowledge. Of course, he's from England.

Hence the poll!

1) Plenty of times I've boiled eggs and the shells have been intact at the end of boiling (in fact, I find this to be the rule rather than the exception).

2) What about cracked shells makes the eggs "real yucky"?
Kalashnikover_Rebbe
The eggs don't get "yucky" if the shell cracks. (at least not hard boiled) There is no appreciable difference except sometimes it oozes and gets ugly shaped...

Kalashnikover_Rebbe
That only happens if it cracks RIGHT at the beginning which is rare...
I would think there is a far greater probability of messing up the egg trying to poke a hole in it...

It's such a tiny tiny tiny tiny tiny hole.
greentiger
Putting a match in the pot while it boils is meant to prevent that.

Kalashnikover_Rebbe
Real Brits poach eggs, they don't boil them like the peasants do...
