Quicken? Excel? Spiral notebook? Other?

There was an article in the NYT recently about mint.com that really intrigued me. You type in your bank info and it organizes your spending so you can see exactly what goes where.

I don't...
I know how much money I have and try not to spend more than that....

I use Microsoft Money and would be wary of storing all my financial information on mint.com servers that are just waiting to be hacked.

Quicken. I like seeing the reports it makes and having categories for income/expenses. I can download the info from my bank and zap it into the system.

I have direct deposit, spend when I need and hope there is leftover for savings (though I haven't even had access to my savings account since well before the summer). I check my bank account before making big payments like tuition, but that's pretty much all the tracking I do. I'll have to be more careful now that my credit limit shot up after missing one payment! (by a day!)

Many people use this one: http://corporate.yodlee.com/I would not store my info there either.

I don't think that happened.

Quicken, since my wife was using that before we got married and I just kind of went with it. I basically use it as my check register and that's it.

That's interesting, I would expect your credit limit to shoot DOWN upon missing a payment.....

Right now I am using pen and paper combined with online banking.
Now that I have a computer, though, I am thinking of getting software.
Especially since someone in the household has a tendency not to double check his math (we only use a calculator for taxes, geeks we are).

I guess I'm the only one who heard of this then...once you miss a payment you become their money making toy. They don't make a penny off you so long as you make all your payments on time. Once you miss one they see they can make money off you so they are happy to lend you more.

Paper and pen.

Then again, my finances are not that complicated....

Paper and pen, something tangible to keep track in.

As they get more complicated perhaps these programs will become necessary.
brianna
Spiral notebook plus daily online banking.

I personally use MS Money. Someone I know uses something called Moneydance, and he said he likes it a lot, as it works on PC, Mac, and Linux.
