If I want to get ground "veggie meat" to use in milchig recipes, what are the best brands? Anything specific to look for/avoid?
BroadwayFreak
I prefer Morningstar Farms crumbles.

Oh, that kind of meat, whoops. Never mind....

Definitely this:

There's also pre-shechted fake meat, but it's nowhere as good.

veggie crumbles are good, but I recently had veggie chicken strips that were so delicious! I'm going to look for them next time I go shopping.

I like this kind. We also really like their sausage.

I'd use the pareve one - that way you could mix meat in...

They also sell dried TVP crumbles in a tall box thingy that looks like a milk carton..I remember it being yellow..longshelf life.

We use the Smart Ground too and get the Ortega taco shell kit to go with it.

I use that brand when I need the meal to be pareve, but prefer Morningstar Farms.

Do any of these actually taste remotely like meat? I was vegan for 6 years and never found a meat substitute that tasted anywhere close to the real thing (though there is a brand of chicken patties that's pretty good). I've always found it easier to get a more authentic taste simply by subbing the dairy ingredients (ie, the sour cream and cheese in a fajita) than the meat.

I believe Morningstar products are dairy. So technically not meat, they are also not pareve.

Yeah, I know. Generally it's used it because people want to add a dairy componet to it, so unless you're CY or are using it to make a pareve sub. for a vegetarian at a fleishig meal, it doesn't really matter.

i don't know about the other posters here, but when i used meat substitutes it was more for texture than taste, at least in cases where i used the crumbles.

Thanks to those who posted with helpful suggestions.

I bought some of the veggie meat to use in tacos and blech, they were gross. It never seperated, like regular meat.
BroadwayFreak
Which kind did you use?

Morningstar veggie crumbles taste much better than gimmee lean (and have more of a meat-like texture) than the light life brand.

I used the Gimme Lean stuff. I'll definitly try the crumbles though.

i used the morningstar crumbles to make stuffed mushrooms and they came out really great. here's the recipe if anyone wants to try it:

1/2 package of morningstar crumbles
1 cup of shredded motzerella
1/4 cup finely chopped onion (used 1/2 of med size)
garlic powder, to taste
6 - 8 "stuffing" mushrooms (they're the same as reg mushrooms, just bigger and shaped more bowl-like)

take out stems of mushrooms. place mushroom "bowls" on greased cooking sheet.
mix first four ingredients together in bowl, add in little mountains to bowls.
bake at 350 for about 15 min.

(i chopped the mushrooms stems, added a bunch of other veg and the rest of the crumbles to make a huge omlette.)
