I think it depends on the exact nature of the "electrolyte reaction". It the onion is really nothing more than a "sponge" to hold the electrolytes I think it would be mutar, provided of course you ate it after the charge has worn out.

But if it is part and parcel of the reaction, then there is a physical change to the onion and you would have to eat your iPod as well which is inadvisable...
