The Magic Flute wub.gif is one of my favorite stories...

QUOTE(batya_d @ Dec 2 2007, 10:55 AM) *
start a topic on classical music and I'll win back your heart.

As I've mentioned already, I feel that the 'Magic Flute' is one of Mozart's greatest works. Half folk tale, half masonic mystery play, appealing to all ages (this was the first record I ever owned, a present of my grandmother) it features some of the finest music ever written. I love Otto Klemperer's 'Beethovenesque' interpretation, but that is only a recording.

The best adaptation ever must be Ingmar Bergman's 1975 film, which is unfortunately very hard to get on DVD.
He really brought out the fairy-tale ambience and it's apparently the closest to the way it would've been performed in Mozart's days- including the sets which were copies of original 18th Century designs.

Zu Hilfe - Triumph! - Lasst uns zu unsrer Fürstin eilen
Bei Männern, welche Liebe fühlen
Schnelle Füße - Das klinget - Könnte jeder brave Mann
Hm! hm! hm!
Drei Knaben - Pamina (when I was young i wanted to be one of the 'Three Boys'- this is in fact one of my favourite scenes)
Papageno! Papagena!
and, of course, Der Hölle Rache

Enjoy...

Warning: Kol ishoh, etc.

rolleyes.gif Quite obviously, they are not.

And get rid of that ladyboy in your signature - there's no need to bandy your deviances about on this board.

Certainly not with you, old chap- you probably think 'irony' means 'sort of like iron, like 'brassy' '.

And can you please leave this thread- it's most certainly not intended for the likes of you.

What format do you need?

Maybe I already asked you this, Schiffschul, but are you familiar with Julie Taymor's production of die Zauberfloete that has run at the Met in NY a few times? It appeared on PBS in full stage version. We saw it first from standing room, then on tv, and it was really great to see the costumes and sets up close.

Yesterday was a Brahms 2nd symphony day, and of course every day is a beethoven's 4th piano concerto day-- rubinstein's. Every day.

I'm writing my graduate thesis on Wagner, and keep trying to listen to it while I work for inspiration, but somehow I always come back to Mozart. Though, Der Fliegende Hollaender is ok to accompany studying. Hojohe! Hallojo!

I'm not sure where you want this thread to go, but that's what been on my mind, musically, the last few days.

I don't ask these things to just hear myself type. I'm really curious.

PAL/Region 2.

I have a multi-region player, but it takes time and I don't like to order things from the States because it takes just too long.
I did see an English seller offer a copy on amazon.co.uk for £20... maybe I'll try them.

No, I haven't seen this production. But to be honest, I'm really more interested in 'historical re-enactment', if you get my drift. What I like so much about Bergman's 'Magic Flute' is its folksy, warm ambience- I've seen similar productions performed at the small Imperial Court Theatre in Schloss Schönbrunn.

I would find it rather hard to be inspired by Wagner- and not necessarily because of the man's personal views or dislikes, for his music and his operas proclaims the very contrary- they're celebrations of love and freedom. I like The Ring, Parsifal and the Meistersinger for their mediævalistic themes, but the music is at times hard going.

I don't know- wherever it wants to, I suppose. As long as its not the land where S-male dwells. rolleyes.gif
I started it off with the Bergman post in order to express my appreciation and to maybe introduce people to the film who didn't know it.
Also, I thought it would be a good idea to have a 'classical music' thread that, for once, goes a bit beyond the usual

Yes, it takes a certain kind of self possession to pass off cruelty as honesty, and actually believe it.

And it takes a person who can't accept a truth to misconstrue it into something other than what it is.

Everybody looks at other people far more critically than they look at themselves. It's grown up to try focusing your honesty on yourself. Would you like it if a chareidi was "honest" with you in his opinions of your judaism? If you can't take it, don't dish it. And even if you can, grow up.

Not everyone looks at others far more critically than they look at themselves. Most I associate with are far more critical of themselves than others. and, I would be greatly appreciative. Honesty is something I admire, respect and need in my life. Try me.

In their own little small minded self righteous way, no doubt. But when it really matters, they have no problem being honest, and valuing their own brilliance over others' incompetence.
Ahavati
The people I associate with are not small minded or self righteous.
