It's my son's birthday tonight and I want to bake a menorah cake. I thought of just baking a regular 9'13'' pan (or two) and cutting strips and setting them up in the shape of a menorah. I'm not great with cake decorating so I don't want to do anything that requires fancy icing. I would leave the cake without icing, maybe spell out his name on the base, and put yellow frosting near the tips for flames. Has anyone done anything similar before? Any suggestions?

I'm not that geshikt. Can you make a regular cake, and then put lady fingers on top for the menorah? Candy corn for the flames? Not sure....

That's an idea too. I could maybe use wafers instead of lady fingers for branches. Candy corn for flames sounds like a good idea too. Thanks Agent! I think I know how to bake this cake with a minimum of fuss and aggravation. (Do you want to start a cookbook--baking for the non-geshikt?)

Gah! No. It's sweet! Sorry I didn't post a response to your cake pic. I just remembered this as soon as I saw the first post. Sorry.

What did you do with the part you cut out?

Yeah, it doesn't look like 8 wafers will fit. Maybe I'll look for something smaller.

I saved the cake and I'm planning on adding a candle every night and eating it on the last day (or maybe Shabbos? Not sure yet). We had jelly donuts for dessert tonight so no one was really in the mood for cake.

I saved the scraps, they're in the freezer. Chocolate cake is still chocolate cake. smile.gif
