Not sure if this quite belongs here. (I was debated between here and the general Misc. Advice & Help.)

Anyway, I need a jewelry box. Specifcally, I have earrings that need to be kept safe and necklaces that need to be kept untangled (I've seen hooks on some models which look promising, anyone found those helpful?) I also have some chunky stuff like bangle bracelets, some other necklaces, some rings, etc.

So, does anyone have an opinion on the various styles of jewelry boxes? A particular model/brand they recommend? Something they thought was great that turned out not to be?

Personally I'd get one of those stands that look like a neck for the necklaces and they have holes to poke the earings in. Haven't got one but they seem to be the most practical.

Could you post a pic? Not quite sure what you're talking about.

We just keep everything in the original boxes that were designed for whichever piece of jewelry, that way earrings stay in the box and are safe, and necklaces stay untangled.

Too cumbersome. Don't have the original boxes for everything (e.g., jewelry from grandmothers' stashes.) Don't have a safe. Don't live in Ontario. The entire system just wouldn't work for me.

ETA: You edited. Most unfortunate since the original one was quite funny.

Yeah, if you don't have original boxes then it doesn't work. Although if you did, the boxes would likely stack neatly.
In any event, what do you have from your grandmother, and do other grandchildren have equivalent heirlooms?

Does your wife (or you) remember what's in each box? What if she wants a particular pair of earrings? Does she have to go through all the boxes to find them? I want something where I can see what I've got in a nice organized manner. (Right now some stuff is in boxes, some in drawstring bags, some in those cloth jewelry roll-up things. Too much hassle.)

I'm not going to answer your question because it's a touchy subject. The answer to the second part is "no".

I think she remembers what's in both boxes.

Do you prefer the chunky stuff or the more delicate stuff?

Why would you suspect such a thing? (I apologize if I've given anyone a worse opinion than necessary about my family.)

Depends on my mood/outfit. (However, my "chunky" stuff is still pretty delicate by others' standards.)

Are there holes in your collection? Do you need more of anything? Maybe need is the wrong word. What would you most appreciate next?
And is white or yellow gold better?

[I'm not hijacking. I'm just killing time till jewelry box suggestions are posted].

I'll rephrase:
If your husband wanted to or had occasion to buy you something, and he could read your mind, what psychic waves would you try to transmit to him?

I don't understand.

If you're trying to figure out what to get your wife, I'm afraid I can't be of much assistance b/c I don't know her or her taste.

If you're trying to figure out what to get me, it really isn't necessary. I consider us just friends.

My husband doesn't visit h.com (which is why I was able to post his hanuka present before giving it to him and be confident it would remain a surprise) so posting a wishlist would be pointless.

Not to worry; I know what to get her, but thanks.

That's why I was asking about your husband. [My wife has told me I am not to buy jewelry for other females]

Understood.

Rather, I'm just trying to figure out what sort of things you like, your taste, what you're thinking. Just like on h.com we ask about all sorts of things about other members.

No need to answer if you're uncomfortable - I didn't mean to make you so, and apologize for doing so. We can just wait till someone goes back on topic with a jewelry box suggestion.

Not really uncomfortable, just didn't see where you were headed.

I think, honestly, I probably have enough jewelry. My problem is more forgetting that I have a specific necklace or not being able to find a specific set of earrings when I want to wear them. This is actually a large part of why I want a jewelry box since it would let me see what I already own and accessorize accordingly.

So, any jewelry box suggestions?

I have something like this that I was given for my bas-mitzvah. So far, so good. I find the hooks for necklaces very helpful. I keep a couple things in their original boxes, and I also have a very small travel-size 'box' for when I go on trips.

That looks nice. Sort of a standard jewelry box. (lotsa $$$$, though)

What about something like this or this or this? Or, does anyone have one of these?

I'm currently using an empty Krembo container for my jewelry box. Kind of like an egg carton, but smaller and deeper. Very classy, I know.
Spot
i like using one similar to this. it's small, but big enough to hold everything; it's see-through so that you don't have to rummage as much if looking for something particular, plus you can see almost everything at once; travels well and doesn't get in the way. they also come in all sizes and colors. it's all practical and not at all fancy so if that bothers you, it's small enough to keep in a drawer until needed.

there are also sectioned boxes if you like that better.

Interesting, I'll have to check out the containers next time I see Krembos. (OT: are they parve?)

Do your necklaces get tangled? I might check out the sectioned ones. An interesting idea.

They are. It's probably more worth it to buy a proper jewelry box, though- unless you like the "I'm too cheap to buy a proper jewelry box" look. smile.gif

they do but not to the point that it's a hassle to take them out - just pull it out and unpluck the few earrings that cling on, no biggie. ironically, one necklace that's kept in its original box was the one that got itself tangled beyond wear - the chain was so thin and delicate that it got into a knot and i can't take it out... i might have to take it to a jewler or something.

Right now, most of my jewelry is in drawstring bags (the kind you get at craft stores for wedding/shower favors) and the necklaces get tangled horribly. I think it's because I have several on delicate chains. Also, it's a pain to root around in them for the piece I want (or I dump all the contents into my hand which is even more of a pain.)

The box with multiple compartments looked promising. I think I might swing by a craft store to see if they have one that shuts firmly (I used to have something similar for embroidery cotton but the lid was constantly popping open and letting everything fall out.)

Sigh, I was sort of hoping for something nice and pretty, though.

you might still be able to maybe for the pieces you wear most often and the compartment one for "long term" storage.

i've personally found them to be pretty but not as useful. things still get tangled and sometimes snag on the felt interior. the ones with the drawers are particularly annoying because things might fall behind/underneath and you wonder where they've gone. enjoy whatever you choose!

I got a box for my bas mitzva with the little "chandelier" where you can hang chains and I dont recommend it because the chains still get tangled and the chains are too long for the space.
Nechama
I had more time to think-
The Bombay Company makes lovely $$ jewelry boxes, however, they have discontinued their websites and you can only shop in store. Target sometimes has jewelry boxes as well. I think you need to think about how you store jewelry now to pick a good box- if you still have a lot of items in their original packages then maybe you want deep drawers or space to stack the boxes. If everything is loose, then more shallow drawers are ok. If you have lots of rings the ring bumps will be useful, otherwise they are a waste of space.
To prevent thin chains for tangling I fold up a tissue, and then wrap the chain around that. That could also work with a soft piece of foam.

I ended up with a sectioned box like Spot recommended (thanks, Spot). Not that all the other suggestions weren't great (and appreciated), but practicality and money won out.

I got it at the craft store and also got some plastic canisters that I can use to store sets and keep things further organized. Finally, I got some plastic canvas for earrings and/or to loop necklaces through.

To be honest, I'm not quite sure how I'm going to set it up and there will probably be some adjusting and modifying as I go along but it seems like the best option for right now.
