Add grated cheese to a veg. salad, no big whoop.

greek is probably the only one i know - leafy veggies, feta cheese, black olives. i do love it, but wanted something different.

1. 8 oz cream cheese total, right?
2. i only know whipped or block cream cheese. if they mean latter, why 5 bars??

I once ate the yummiest real cheese salad. All different types of cheese, cubed and mixed together - it was yum! (why are we talking about this on a fast day?)

because today is the shabbos food shopping day. and i'll be picking up my daughter earlier from the daycare, so only 2 hours to decide what to make and what i should buy.

for shavous youare supposed to have milchigs. a regular shbbos, you doh't have to.

perhaps the halacha is more lenient in that case.

While I cringe at the thought of a milchig Shabbos (although one meal might not be so terrible and I hear some Sefardim/Temanim do it in the summer), I really don't see any blatant halachic issues....

Besides if you are already eating milchigs, it shows you don't have the proper respect for Shabbos, and not using fancy china is no big deal...

To be honest I'd prefer a good milchig meal to some crappy roast chicken. But I agree that fleishigs done right is no comparison....

Yum, I would love a milchig shabbos meal. Especially in the summer, you can have an early milchig meal and then do fleishigs for seuda shlishis.

How would be having milchigs for the main meal and fleishigs for seuda shlishis be any different than doing things the other way around (which seems to be quite widespead)?

hee-hee, i knew i'll start a war with my milchig shabbos.

i hardly ever eat fleishig, chicken soup aside (last shabbos was the first in a long time i made chicken; usually i make something fleishig in a crock pot about once a month). mostly it's pareve shabbosim.

so, milchig shabbos it is i love milchig stuff!

RH - many people eat milchig at home on shvuos, after making kiddush, and then 30 mins till the fleishig seuda - i've seen it very often.

Because the main meal is supposed to be your main meal. It's like when people eat a split meal on Shabbos which comes out on YT, and eat their fish in the first meal, and their cholent in the second meal. My Rav doesn't approve of that.

Yup. There's an inyan that the "second meal" [where the Friday night meal is the first meal] be the main meal as opposed to seudah shelishit.
(I'm not sure what that has to do with a shabbos YT, however, since that would apply every shabbos, although if Sunday is YT, then there's the additional problem of eating a big meal erev YT close to YT).

Note as well that's one of the problems of treating kiddush in shul like a meal and then counting lunch as seudah shelishit.

People do a split meal when it's Shabbos and then YT that night, so instead of eating a Shabbos meal at like 12, then seudas shlishis at 6, and then the YT meal at 9, they'll eat a split meal in the early afternoon.

When do the kids eat if there's no seudah shelishit at 6...they wait till after shul at 9 or 10 and sit down to soup and fish and roast and tzimmis and kugel?

In my house, everything's very shleppy, so it's more like first meal at 1 (serve fish, cholent, maybe cold cuts). That lasts until 2. Then a break for officially half an hour but usually ends up being more like an hour. So the next meal starts at 3 (serve liver, salads). Ends at 4. Then you get to take a nap for two hours if you're lucky. [All times are approximate of course.] We don't really have kids in my house, but if there are kids....I don't know. Their mothers find something to serve them while the men are in shul? Since it's YT, you can warm something up for the kids who aren't old enough to be staying up for the meal.

You DON'T do that, the whole chiddush is you can be mekayim SS BEFORE the second meal... Otherwise you would have to wash for kiddush anyway...

If one isn't washing for kiddush in shul, I would think, in my humble opinion, that would be even more problematic to treat it as the second seudah and then your lunch as seudah shelishit, even if your lunch is after chatzot.

That's why it's a chiddush...

BTW, just as is assur to have shabbos lunch without chulent it's assur to have SS without herring.

About milchig salads? Most of the real caesar salad recipes are milchigs. I really don't know though.
