I'm such a cell phone novice that I'm not ever sure what the right questions to ask are, so bear with me with if they don't make sense.

I have a file that I want to use as a ringtone. How do I know if I can put it on my cell phone? Is there a particular file type I have to use? How do I get it on the phone?

I hope this helps.

Maybe if you told us what "the phone" was, and what kind of "file" we are discussing was it would engender more helpful responses...

There is no phone and there is no file. I was thinking about buying a new phone but actually now I don't think I'm going to bother and the phone I have is so old that I bet it can't handle a custom ringtone. As for the file, it's a video file, so getting the sound into an audio file was going to be a whole 'nother headache.
