Something potentially long-lasting, somewhat practical, and meaningful. To mark an occasion. Any ideas?

A dictionary. There is perhaps no gift more full of meaning.

Male or female?

Who's it for?

Female? Male?

Not a bad idea. Though the joke was. tongue.gif

A fancy desk-top clock.

A nice pen set.

A watch.

An oversized jar of jellybeans.

Gift certificate in Sharper Image or the likes. There's ALWAYS stuff I would like to get there.

Jewelry works well.
accolade
I'd rather not give a gift card. I think they're tacky and a good way of saying "I couldn't think of anything to get for you."

Nice ideas so far, thanks all. Any others?

You can shop around. I've found nice stuff.

Or, you could get a nice jewelry box.
TheDuncePolice
Depending on what type of stuff she likes and if you know what she does/doesn't like, I'd check out brookstone.com or sharperimage.com or hammacherschlemmer.com. They all have cool unusual stuff that are USEFUL.

I think someone's already mentioned this website on h.com before.

I wish I could remember who it was so I could give proper credit.

I think that www.redenvelope.com has a great selection of gifts in a variety of price ranges, including some beautiful jewelry in your price range.

I'll look through that, too. Thanks. But I'm not looking for jewelry.

I like the idea of "by the month" gifts. Maybe this or this.

Those look cool for someone with a green thumb.

Both are very nice, but I really like the earthenware pots with etched illustrations of the flower.

I like the second 'this'.

Me too. I'd be delighted to receive that.

Regarding the second 'this,' my sis got it for my mom, for Chanukah. It's pretty nice.

It's good to hear the opinion of someone who has seen it. I'm a little wary of giving a gift that requires effort on the part of the recipient, though. Hm.

I think you need to know if the recipient will appreciate it and enjoy caring for it. I for one would love such a gift. However, my neighbor got a beautiful plant arrangement as a gift and finds it a burden. She doesn't have a green thumb and it's more of a bother. I even offered to take it off her hands instead of watching it waste away (which happens to every plant she gets) and she said she can't, as the giver visits her sometimes and will see it missing.

I'm like that. I hate getting plants because they're so pretty and I know they'll soon die under care.

Yep. Once I got two different plants for my birthday and within a year both were dead. They should have given me a cactus. Succulents I can deal with.

I've managed to kill both cacti and aloe. I'm an embarrassment.
