DD likes making sushi but isn't very creative, and I think a sushi cookbook might help her.
Online I only see Kosher Japanese cooking - does anyone have it/like it/recommend it, or should I look for a regular sushi cookbook instead?
Thanks.

A sushi
cookbook? Isn't that an oxymoron?

Sushi making doesn't really depend on recipes as opposed to technique. The recipe is pretty much the same all over: rice with rice vinegar and raw fish. Some also include Nori (dried seaweed)
Expert itamaé (sushi chefs) have to study for over 10 years...

And I'm not so sure why it needs to be "kosher" -- does it tell you the brand of seaweed to buy?

No, what kind of fish. Plenty of sushi is made from non-kosher fish and other seafood, such as crabs and eels.

Yeah, I think a treife cookbook would be too much "giliui" for her.

What's "giliui"?

I agree with Krum. She can always go online and find different recipes. I also don't see why it's necessary to specifically purchase a Kosher sushi cookbook. So what if you can't make a few recipes. . . just swap out eel or crab or whatever other treif fish with something else.

Goldfish, you never heard the term, giliu? Reveal?
I thought a cookbook would be nice for her, with pictures....okay .........

I got a nice Sushi book from the $5 rack at Barnes and Noble, it gives the ingredients, techniques, and variations. I just swap out any non kosher fish.
Your daughter is a teen, she knows kosher from treif fish, give her a nice sushi picture book and she'll know what to do. the pictures will help inspire and give ideas for rolling (i.e. inside out roll, with sesame seeds (white or black) and ingredients (veggies, raw fish, cooked fish, mock crab sticks, sweet potato, pickled ginger...)

I suppose I have, but I don't understand what it means in this context. Having a non-kosher recipe book would be too revealing for your daughter? Revealing in what way? Has she never gone to an aquarium?

I think she would take one look at all the ingredients she can't use or never heard of, and bag the whole thing.

She's never heard of crabs or eels?!

I, personally, would not recommend giving someone a non-kosher recipe book, but just out of convenience. You're making this sound a lot more heavy than it should be.

I guess I'm off to Border's for a regular sushi cookbook, then.

You could also print off Sushi Metsuyan's sushi menu and replicate the rolls from there. They tell you exactly what's in there, it's free, and it's all kosher. She may not need the pictures, she just may need the shopping list or an idea of what goes together in a roll.
Just a thought, I'm trying not to buy so many cookbooks because I find I cook one recipe from them and then it's just a waste of my money. Rather, I'm trying to get more stuff offline for free.

That's pretty ghetto to nick a menu and give it to someone as a gift...

Being that she's 18 and going to work soon, I hope that whatever she gets now will be for her own home someday. Course, she may marry a non sushi lover ......

Wouldn't it be cool if there was a Kosher Sushi DVD?

That's actually more necessary than a cookbook since you can show technique a whole lot better.

Ah sorry, I forgot that it was for a gift. I was just thinking for every-day help. A Japanese cookbook will probably have sushi in it, do you know if they have it in Borders or BandN so you can look at it before you buy it?

I got something at Borders and had it gift wrapped so I don't know the title, but it's got lots of pictures for making all kinds of sushi at home. $15
