For films similar to Dirty Dancing I'd recommend Save the Last Dance and Shall We Dance? (the original 1996 Japanese version, not the awful North American remake)

Some of my favorite romance movies:

The Road Home (chinese film)
Anna Karenina (the North American 1997 version)
Alan and Naomi
Train Man (japanese film)
Whisper of the Heart (japanese anime)
Annie Hall
Sleepless in Seattle
While You Were Sleeping
Love Actually
(I know I'll be made fun of for including it, but: )A Walk to Remember

and a bunch of others I'm forgetting

ETA: If I had to pick 2 I'd pick Whisper of the Heart and The Road Home. If I had to pick one, I'd pick The Road Home.

Sleepless in Seattle is just a similar movie to An Affair to Remember.
A Walk to Remember was a good book, the movie was ok.

And of course Titanic is a great romance. What isn't romantic about it?

I most certainly was NOT.
There is nothing more romantic than someone falling into his own trap and ending up being the seduced instead of the seducer and then getting dumped and having to win her back. Besides, he (seemingly) did teshuva at the end...

It's very romantic and all, but didn't all the hype around it give you a particularly bad aftertaste?

No. It was a really bad movie, but I cried my eyes out at the end so it still gets a thumbsup.gif from me.

So why wouldn't you just say you liked an Affair to Remember?

And no, the hype didn't ruin the movie at all. I'm not usually influenced by 'hype' - if it's a good movie, it's good. Who cares if there's hype?

Why was it a bad movie? And you gave it a thumbsup.gif because it made you cry?

Very badly written -- poor plotting, poor characterization, poor dialogue. But the acting was top notch, so in the end, I was able to overlook the badness and appreciate it anyway.
