I love giving myself time limits to clean up. It's amazing how much can get done in a half-hour to an hour. But knowing that I'm only investing that much time allows me to neglect the rest with a clean conscience.

I do the heavy cleaning in my kitchen and bathroom at the same time. I spray stuff in the kitchen to let it soak. Then spray in bathroom. Scrub kitchen, then scrub bathroom. I only need to get the supplies out once and just power through it and then I'm done.

I found flylady to be a real fly lady i.e. messy and hard to figure out.

Tip: When prepping supper, or any food, I put the storage bags from the veggies I buy in the grocery, on the counter, put all the shmutz onto the bag while peeling, cutting etc... Dump the bag when done and your counter doesn't even need to be wiped. I love how simple it is.

What didn't you like about fly lady? Could you give an example?

I do the veggie bag thing also. Very nice.

First soap all the dishes, then rinse them all off.

I found her site to be a huge mess. Maybe it was updated since back then. I loved largefamilylogistics.net, but either it's down now, or they closed the site.

The site I agree with you about. There's too much in too many categories. That's why I suggested the yahoogroup. Emails come right to you (granted thehre were too many for me to keep up with so I eventually unsubscribed; but reading the general tips i.e. "till your shoes" can really put you in a different mindset).

Also, just being reminded you're not the only SHE on this planet gives you a huge! boost. Yeah, we all try to take on too much, want to give personalized gifts to every family member, start too late, end up cramming in last minute details that never end up getting finished and eventually have to rush out and plunk down big $ on last-minute-hardly-personal trinkets.

Assign a place for everything. The hardest part when cleaning up is to put away the stuff that don't have a designated place.
Don't let newspapers and magazines pile up. Throw it away when you're done reading. Open your mail right away and throw away junk mail and envelopes right away.
Dishtowels are used in the kitchen. Don't keep these with your regualr towels and linen. Designate one shelf in a kitchen cabinet for dishtowels.
There are always these random things that you have in the house but haven't yet found a use for it. Dump it, give it away or sell it on ebay.
Shoebags are great.
Large ziplock bags are the best invention.
Every few weeks, look through your kitchen (pantry, fridge, freezer). You'll find random things laying around. Things you bought but never used. Use them up before restocking. I love coming up with creative recipes from things I have in the house.
Children can help with chores. Give them little chores around the house. Once they get older, make them in charge of specific jobs. (i.e. emptying the garbage cans for all the rooms, making sure that there is always cold water, seltzer in the fridge).

..I can go on forever! I'm a neat freak and this is my thing.

One of my pet peeves is watching people peel veggies (or dump garbage) into the sink.

Another tip is to wash as many dishes as possible while you are cooking in the kitchen. It makes the after-meal clean up so much easier.

• If you have a side-by-side washer & dryer (or even a flat surface right next to it), fold the freshly-dried laundry AS SOON AS IT EMERGES from the dryer. I find this is the best way of making sure clean piles of laundry don't just sit around on the couch or bed waiting forever to be folded.

• Have 2 small baskets for incoming & outgoing mail sitting right near your front door. Keep a large calendar there too and have everyone write their appointments/important activities. That way you each know who's doing what/going to be where and can better plan that way.

• 1-2x a week- scrub the toilet (and whole bathroom if you choose) right before you go into your morning shower. You'll step out knowing your facilities are sparkling and you've washed the sweat and poisons from your skin and can begin your day.

• Set a timer for 5 mins. (I did this long before I saw it on Flylady; they do 10 iirc) and clean what you can in that time. That's all. What isn't accomplished in that time save for another timed-increment later in the day or the next. It really breaks things down. As an aside, I did it with a 9 yo to help clean his room (oh was he balking!). I told him I had a new rule. He was only allowed to clean for one minute and that's all; I wouldn't allow any more. He loved the idea and raced around his room. Needless to say he asked for another 1-minute burst bec. the first was so much fun! smile.gif
