Hey folks,

Someone I know who just came to Israel is about to buy an apartment in Old Katamon / the Greek Colony (not German). And by "about to" I mean today. I've never heard of this neighborhood, and I have no idea where it even in, but they called me for advice and so I decided to ask the H.com community:

Where is this neighborhood? (presumably they know; that's for my own curiosity.)
How nice a neighborhood is it?
How much is a 2 bedroom apartment (2nd floor) in that area worth, approximately?

Thanks for the help!

The Greek Colony is between Baka and Katamon (Old Katamon being at the edge of Katamon). If you draw a triangle with the sides being Emek Refaim, Rochel Immanu, and Eliezer Hamodia that's the Greek Colony. (It's near the German Colony too).

I think most people think it's part of Katamon and your not talking about such a big area anyway so it's basically the Katamon crowd.

If I remember correctly on one end of Rochel Immanu there are some of the most beautiful houses I have ever seen in my life (And I have been to five towns.) Mansions I mean. The other side is nice apartments.

My friend was looking at a simalar apt...I think 60-70m I think in the low 300Ks. A few blocks away is Talbiyeh which I have heard from many real estate agents is the highest priced real estate in Jerusalem.

I thought Shaarei Chessed came pretty high up in that list? (of expensive real estate). i don't know Rochel Immanu area, but I do know Emek Refaim and the German colony. I used to go swimming in the municipal baths there (before I frummed out and stopped mixed swimming smile.gif )

I lived in that neighborhood for a few years.
Basically Greek Colony is just off Emek Refaim (the main drag), just another part of the German Colony, as far as I could see. Bordering both Baka and Old Katamon also, in southern Jerusalem.
$300,000 plus sounds about right for a 2 bedroom apartment there, depending of course on the apartment.
The neighborhood is among the most expensive in Jerusalem.
It's a beautiful neighborhood, very nice, with lots of English-speakers as well as native Israelis, and a mix of secular and Modern Orthodox/dati leumi but almost no black-hat or charedim. Both singles and couples/families live in the neighborhood. I highly recommend it.
FYI

Right next to Katamon.
Very nice.
Pretty expensive

They're not that far away from each other.

It never was. I know dati people who have been living in Katamon for over a decade.

There are very few neighbourhoods in Jerusalem today that are truly secular...

True enough.
There are only neighborhoods that are secular/Modern Orthodox and then other neighborhoods that are charedi.
Greek colony is one of those secular/Modern Orthodox neighborhoods.
