If you were going to a super bowl party, what kind of foods (pizza, hot dogs, pretzels, dip, etc...) would you like to see there?

I would like any kind of bad for you main course like pizza or hot dogs. I'd also like something like french fries. Any kind of junk food snacks would do like potato chips or pretzels. The key beverage is beer. If you don't have beer then I don't think you can really call it a party.

I like hot foods also. I think it adds something to the usual chips and pretzels.

I agree, for a Super Bowl party, you need junky food.

I suggest pizza so that if you go home later you can still eat some sort of dinner and don't have to be fleishigs - I hate fleishigs.

I love chips and salsa. It's a staple for me.

If it was a party such as superbowl, I would think pizza, beer?, chips/salsa, can you get big pretzels with cheddar cheese melted or nachos with melted cheddar cheese- or something yummy like that...plus don't you need pretzels (the small salty, crunchy type, not big hot type mentioned above)

Also little munchies like candy chocolates or mints, the type you get in a bowl at weddings, and cashews.

I never eat chips, pretzels, etc. Everyday nosh doesn't interest me.

In which case buffalo wings, fire slammers, hotdogs, chili etc.. are the obvious choices....
You can still have chips and salsa just no nachos....

And B"H Beer is pareve.....

Pigs in a blanket. Instead of chicken wings, do chicken drums (easier to eat without creating a mess). I think chicken nuggets are unusual but suitable fare. And vodka for the folks that don't like beer. smile.gif

You don't drink vodka at a football game, that is just uncivilized rolleyes.gif
And the whole POINT of wings is the mess...

Besides what are chicks doing at a Superbowl party anyway, they just cause a distraction.....

I don't GO to Superbowl parties...probably because there's no vodka...
Very Lucky Guy
I like the chili idea. I like sub sandwiches too, but they are extraordinarily expensive to buy.

Vodka?! Well, any chicks who think drinking vodka=a good time are invited to my house any time they want (only when my wife is home, of course).

what do girls (or guys who don't like sports) do at superbowl parties? why would someone go if they don't like sports -- food? socializing?

is it rude to socialize for like 10 min and then take the food to go?
Very Lucky Guy
Yes, I think it's rude to go for 10 minutes, eat, and leave. If you go I think you have to be there for at least an hour before you leave (if you are eating).

A person not interested in sports would go to socialize. I'd say that half the people there don't really care that much about the game. To be honest, I don't really care. My team is not playing, so my interest is only passing. I'll probably be drunk for most of it (I have a drinking problem and a social dysfunction problem; the social dysfunction necessitates the need to drink, which exacerbates the social dysfunction, which leads to more drinking - a sad spiraling cycle), so I won't even remember most of what happened.

How does financials work? Does host pay for everything? I think I once mentioned that the only superbowl party that mh ever invited towhich I believe was before I knew what sport it referenced) was one where everyone who went had to chip in about $5 for the food. Is that the norm?

Hey! Have you told melech that if he drinks when his wife forces him to socialize it makes the social part easier?
Very Lucky Guy
Melech doesn't sound like a drinker, and from what he has written about how his family eats (healthy foods) I am going to infer that heavy drinking would be frowned upon.

Good point, but it would solve the social issues, as you have pointed out.

It's really not so bad if you buy cheap deli and make yourself; for $10 you could probably buy enough deli to feed a small group. Chili is great AND economical (it's become my new shabbos stand-in for chulent).

BIG time. You don't go to someone's house just so you can take a doggy bag home. VERY tacky and inappropriate. If you're going, and staying, you're welcome to whatever the host provides, and you can even go davka for the food, but you need to STAY. You also can't, IMO, stay for an hour or two and then take food to go. It's rude. If, at the end of the party, the host tells you "nu, take, I have too much to eat myself", that's one thing. But deciding to pack food for yourself or your spouse or your kids without asking is really, really rude. I know of several examples where people had simchas or parties and people just took whatever they could fit into their pockets, purses, and bags - the result was that the food (which is never cheap, when you're feeding a lot of guests, no matter the fare) was completely gone and the hosts, who were planning on having leftovers to carry them through for a few days, had nothing. By our bris, I remember people loading pockets and me thinking "Wow, we really could've used the break on our grocery bill the extra salads/breads/spreads would've given us.".

I'd add guacamole. Goes great with chips and offers another option besides salsa (although both are yummy.)

Great menu. I think having big bowls of tortilla chips, chili, salsa, guac, spicy fries, onion rings, etc. would be ideal. So many mix-and-match combos. Could put chili on fries, could dip onion rings into salsa, etc.

I would suggest a clear NO DOUBLE DIPPING policy, however.

You go to socialize in another room with anyone else who isn't watching the game or you watch the game. I think those are basically your only two options.

Even salami is about $4.50 p/lb. That would give me 9 sandwiches for $10. The group I'm thinking of is a lot bigger than that. Plus, they'd be upset if they showed up and I had made salami sandwiches (it would be pretty funny though). Also, and this is the main thing, I'd feel funny about making sandwiches for people. I know I would feel a little grossed out if someone made deli sandwiches for me (handling the bread and meat...).

I am liking the chili ideas. I will discuss this with my life partner.

Really? How is this any grosser than the food handling that will be done for any other dish?

It just seems grosser. Also, people tend to have their own personal style when it comes to sandwich making. Everyone likes to put their meat on a different way and add different things to it. It wouldn't be as fun pre-made. Plus, that I think salami sandwiches is bit of a let-down. When people make sub sandwiches they are talking about different types of meat, along with condiments and add-ons like tomatos, pickles, and the like.

Besides, if I make things in the oven I won't be touching anything with my hands once it starts to cook. Everything goes straight from the oven into a serving bowl or pan.

What happens if you order that sandwich at a restaurant (although I do agree that just salami is a little pathetic for a sub sandwich, I would want some hearty meat like pastrami and stuff)

Restaurants make the food preparation people wear gloves. I don't think most people wear gloves in their own homes.

Agreed. Plus, I think part of the fun is building your own plate. That's why I like the "lots of stuff to put on other stuff" model.

Actually I know quite a few people that do wear gloves when preparing food in their own home. I happen to hate the feel of the plastic gloves, so I prefer to just wash my hands with soap at various intervals.

I haven't found that to be universally true (and a lot of them even do the plating bare-handed).
Very Lucky Guy
Well, in any case, deli sandwiches are out. Ordering it from a restaurant would be cost prohibitive and I don't think people would be happy with making them themselves.

I have a fair idea of what I am going to do. I just wanted some ideas to see if there were things that I missed.
