And Avraham Yitzhak and Ya'akov and one of the shivtei kah (I think).

Incidentally, its not surprising that so many frum Jews have some kind of rabbinic yichus. The more learned Jews had more Jewishly educated families and I would assume more likely to have frum descendents. That's in part why Torah learning is so important for Jewish continuity.

I know of an oldie descended from the Chazon Ish.
There's a shady assumption that I might be directly descended from R' Spektor, but it can't be proven.

for those (many) with incredible yuchasin:
has it had an effect on your lives? is it a source of pride (in a positive sense) or a burden (in a negative sense)? do you feel constrained with expectations? do you think your ancestor would be proud/pleased/satisfied/disappointed with the way you turned out? do you feel you emulate your illustrious ancestor? do you feel you have benefited from his blood? has it been adventageous at all, like in shidduchim or school? or is it just family trivia and you're indifferent? do you feel pressure to keep to a certain family derech?
jake7484
this reminds me of a story...

i mekurav somebody once who was very far from the derech and he had a noncommitted (or so he thought) sexual relationship with a very sleazy descendant of the baal shem tov. when he wanted to become religious he dropped her and she was furious. sometimes when she would find him and flip out and stuff she would mention how she knows he enjoyed their time together and how he should be proud to be shtupping a desendcant of the besht. i told him to say, next time she mentiones her relation to the founder of chassidus, "and i bet he would be really proud of you".

she only needed to hear that once.

Interesting questions, Melech.
In my family it is definitely a source of pride, and I try to ask myself at times if I am behaving in a way that would bring nachas to my 4x great grandfather. I am a big proponent of the Hirschian ideal, specifically Torah im derech eretz, although I am far from a baki on the subject. As for there being "perks", since I don't carry the family name it's not something that ppl would ever guess, and actually aside from close family friends not many ppl in my social sphere know. My siblings and I have always shied away from mentioning it to teachers, and I certainly never say anything to either shadchanim or the boys I date. Where I was raised it is considered distasteful and show-offy to broadcast things like yichus.
By the same token, yichus is relative (no pun intended). I am just as proud of (and more likely to talk about) my grandfather, a"h, who, though not a Rav, was an ehrlicheh Yid in every sense of the term and touched the heart of everyone who had the z'chus to meet him. If I am successful in raising children who will achieve his madreiga in bein adam lachaveiro, I will be very satisfied indeed.

talking about yichus. lehavdil alfei havdules, bein kodesh lechol, in The Da Vinci Code, he mentions einiklech of yoshke. that there are family's famous for being able to trace their ancestry back to him. who did he marry/cohabit with? was she jewish?

Jake, yichus is like having "zero's" .
A person can be a desendant of 6 rebbes , but if they dont work on themselves it's like having a bunch of "zeros".
Its up to each person to turn themselves into a "digit" and transform the "zeros" into numbers.
200, 300. or for thos incredible yachsanim 200000. ;-)

not sure of the source, or exact details, but it's known that some tzadikim and gedolim after they are nifter are zoiche to become part of the beis din shel maaloh.

a godol was once asked how this could be since all the places must be taken already, he answered that if a descendant of any of the beis din commits an aveiroh, then he's fired.

I think i've freed up a lot of space up there... sad.gif

On average for every 30 years there is another generation. A person has 2 parents 4 grand parents and doubles it for every generation up. The shivteay-koh were approximately 3thousand years ago that makes it 100 generations ago. do your sums and work out if you are not an einikel from all of them (nearly impossible).

The topic today got me thinking about this and I remembered something else.
I'm one of only a handful of people in the world alive who is a descendent of all of the Ropshitzer's children.
So that means I'm related to you.
I just made your day, right?
