Anyone know why the power was out in Har Nof and Givaat Shaul this morning?

You gotta love this country, though! I was in the makolet during the black out getting milk for my landlords, and it was dark with candles, and then when the lights came on when I was there, everyone in the makolet (and it was pretty packed) said baruch Hashem together....so cool!

The Israel Electric co. says they are running out of power and threatening power outages.

They ask that everyone refrain from using electrical appliances between the peak hours 5-9 pm.

There could be loss of life from hypothermia due to the extreme cold especially for the elderly and infants if there are outages and no power for heating, so please everyone comply with this request.

That's really stupid. They're peak hours for a reason, what are you supposed to do then!?

If you're not going to be in the room for the next half-hour, turn off the 12-fin heater. Don't leave the bathroom air heater-thingy running after you leave. Soooo many people leave it and forget it's on till a few hrs. later.

Read up on Megavolt's site about cost-effective appliances.

I never use a heater. I but on sweaters and sweatpants and go under the covers. My chashmal bill for 2 months was 154NIS, and apparently 100 of that is for the fridge. So I only used 54NIS worth of electricity for 2 months. No heater, dud on only to heat up for a shower, fan on only for the duration of the shower, light on in the bathroom only for using it...I conserve energy.
Isn't there usually more of an issue with electricity in the summer? Or because the winters here are bone chilling it's worse so people crank up the heaters?

It's the coldest winter here in like a hundred year. And yes, heating does use more electricity than cooling. We broke the record for electricity usage this week. Almost full capacity of what the electric co. claims it could put out.

I don't know. I'd think I'd like to know in advance to stay off the subway...

that's true. I just hate heaters, they make me feel so dry and gross.

I'm sorry that I think it's cool that that's people's first reaction when the lights go back on after a black out on an erev shabbos when licht is at 4:20.

Ha, that's funny, we were discussing that today at my lunch meal. I thought I'd blown something in my house so I called my dad who was 2 hrs away in camp and said, "How do I know which switch I flipped?" and he said, "Your power is also out?!" And then my brother texted from NY and said his power was also out...we knew something was up.

or out of the elevators here...they can get quite claustrophobic...

The cold here is different. You don't warm up by walking into an insulated house. The stone here retains the freezing cold temperature and it can sometimes be colder inside then outside. Also, most people don't have central heat here. It was around -5 at nights here last week, and during the day about 0, 1, 2...not much higher then that. Bone chilling.

Not so cold by NY standards. (And warm by Canada standards.)

In Yerushalayim it's been in the low to mid 30s at night for two weeks straight. But the buildings don't have insulation and many don't have working heating systems. (Remember oil is expensive here.) So many people have purchased these plug in radiators or space heaters and they all use electricity.

The electric company is simply urging people to conserve energy to avoid rolling blackouts - as happened recently in California and Texas - especially since unlike in the summer, blackouts during the winter could be deadly!
