Mesilas Yesharim ch. 8

the point of this chapter is to explain how one can acquire zeal. he explains that just as we fond in ch. 4 that there are three different type\levels of people 1)"those with wholeness of understanding" 2) "those of lesser understanding" 3)"the general populace".

those in category #1 are motivated through their quest for "perfection. those in category #2 are motivated because of their quest for honor. and those in category #3 through their "recognition of the depth of judgment". [See ch. 4 at length].

Here in Chapter 8 he explains that the same applies for zeal, since watchfulness and zeal are very much alike, just one is in the positive and one is in the negative (I guess like "sur merah" and "vassei tov").

he ends off the chapter saying:

QUOTE
You will note that I have embodied in my words the three categories which I discussed in relation to Watchfulness; for Zeal and Watchfulness are virtually the same, and what applies to one may be applied to the other. So that again, those with wholeness of understanding will be motivated by their sense of duty and by their appreciation of the value and worthiness of the deeds in question; those on a lower level, by their anxiety over the apportionment of honor in the World to Come and over the possibility of their being shamed on the day of reward by seeing what they could have had. but lost; and the populace in general, by their concern with this world and its needs, as heretofore explained.

Does:
QUOTE
"Those with wholeness of understanding will be primarily motivated toward Watchfulness by their coming to see clearly that only perfection and nothing else is worthy of their desire and that there is no worse evil than the lack of and removal from perfection.(from chapter 4)"
equal "So that again, those with wholeness of understanding will be motivated by their sense of duty and by their appreciation of the value and worthiness of the deeds in question; "? why does it seem like he explains "sense of duty" earlier in this chapter as if it is only right after all the good g-d has done for him which is really the second level?
