He hates them so much that he makes you wear nothing instead? That seems harsh, though I agree that horizontal stripes can be "widening" in some cases.

I used to think this about stripes, but they have some really cute 3/4 length polos at the Gap this season in stripes, they're so cute I might buy some.

So I think you just have to be careful with stripes. They have to have wide bits to them, either with wide stripes or wide parts with a skinny stripe separating them. Too thin and it just starts to look too busy which I think is just unflattering in any pattern. I think when the colors are similar (like this http://www.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=3...amp;pid=504278) it can also be slimming.
