(I use it with good results)

How much will it slow things down?

It shouldn't slow down the site at all. But loading the video on your screen will depend on the speed of your connection.

Plus, we're THINKING of moving to a much faster server. H.com has an official page load time of 9 seconds - which is really bad.

Hmm, that's what I meant. Even now it's annoying to load a page and find only a link to a youtube video, but I live with it. If my whole computer would start slowing down because a video was loading it would be EXTREMELY bothersome, especially if I was opening the thread for the first time and didn't know that there was a video in it.

Why is it "not available".
I believe IPB allows an [embed] function (granted slightly different than the youtube formated links).
PHPBB does...

HOW TO: Embedding YouTube Videos

1) Find a YouTube Video.
2) When posting a message, select "Insert Special Item" from pull down menu and select "Insert: YouTube"
3) When side panel open for content, insert the YouTube ID for the video - not the full link.
Example: dont post this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vOqwELmFhSA; just post : vOqwELmFhSA

4) Submit post. Be sure to explain what viewers will be seeing on video and be sure not to post questionable content. Foul content = warn/kick/ban.

Personally, I think that's something people should have in mind when posting a link to any video [ie not just embedded YouTube videos]. Rather than just, "Great video" or "click this".

In the URL by the YouTube video. Pretend you are posting the link and then delete everything but the end of it.

Good point. Maybe that's why only YouTube videos can be embedded - apparently there's some sort of religious dispensation for YouTube and therefore even the most Torah True are apparently allowed to surf YouTube.
