NBC on Chassidim

The popular fictional NBC show Law and order, just aired an episode last week which included Chassideim, Williamsburg, Kiryas Yoel and its culture.

Here is an excerpt of that episode.

brianna
It's a pretty good description of New Square but all the men have cell phones. And many have cars.

http://www.jewishworldreview.com/elliot/ge..._and_order.php3 argues that Law and Oder has a "Jewish problem," i.e. it picks on Jews. i'm not sure I agree because LAW really picks on everyone! They portray blacks as a bunch of thugish murderers. Surprise! Its a crime show! They are going to focus on the criminal ellement in the community. The same thing with Jews.
On the other hand, LAW made a pro Jewish show where they go after an anti Semitic murderer who killed his own wife when he found out she was Jewish. I wondered then if LAW was trying to make up for its being criticised as anti Jewish.
Whatever the case, LAW plays into the steryotypes of the community its show choses to focus on. Was this show "good for our public perception?" No.

Here's the story. From what I remember, it was about this 10 yr old Jewish kid who's parents weren't religious, but his dad became religious, and a while later his parents separated and the boy stayed with his mother. He was going to a public school and an older kid at the school was abusing him, and so the boy called a rabbi he knows to take him away. Now he was with his dad in Kiryat Moshe. The mother accused the dad of kidnapping the boy. The police were investigating the story and were wondering why the boy was in the car with the rabbi. The boy told them that he (the boy) wanted him to take him away. He didn't say why, but finally he told them. The older boy who abused him, also abused a few girls too. The court needed to decide whether to send him to jail or to a psychiatric hospital. The 14 yr old boy watched a lot of porn, but it wasn't just that. He was being bullied by some kids at school and so he took a lesson from TV on how to get control and respect. - His widowed dad worked long hours to support him, but I think he still should have been there for his son to have someone to talk to.

Here's the story...

I saw the episode too and you did a good job with the synopsis. The one thing I would add is that when the police went to Kiryat Moshe they suspected the rabbi of being the child molester and arrested him right in the middle of davening and brought him back to the station before learning that the abuser was really the teenage boy and that the rabbi was helping protect the boy.

yea the yiddish was a little wierd - it sounded like russian

I agree. They coulda spent ten bucks and consulted with a real chosid who could fill em in on all those things they screwed up.

Can't understand how they manage to produce that without having checked out the accuracy of details ie, yiddish, code of lifestyle etc.
Reminds me of the film 'a stranger among us' , where there was a murder in the williamsburg community and a cop was placed under cover.
Portrayed pretty well, but too many innaccuracies once again.

Is that what this was all about?

Anyway so on the blog someone posted that the last line was:

"Maybe these chassidim are on to something unplugging their kids from the modern world; these days it may not be such a bad idea.."

They clearly meant Kiryas Joel, although I'm not sure where the street scene was from.

NOWHERE in that clip did it say that they didn't have cell phones or cars. It said they didn't have movies, television or magazines. I can't wait for it to air in the UK.

The Yiddish was appalling. As were the beards. it looked like a bad production of Fiddler on the Roof.

Watch and listen again.

"They’re extremely orthodox. The women wear long skirts. They’re separated from the men on the buses and in the shuls. Many barely speak English. There are no cell phones, very few cars. They have no television movies or magazines. They’re totally sheltered."

If so, the episode actually sounds very pro chasid. The idea of falsely aresting a rabbi would also convey the idea that people don't give chasidim a fair shake. Interesting.

What's up with their research? As doodlehead wrote, can't they spend a few dollars and ask a real chossid to check up on the facts? Do they deliberately change it for the dramatic effect? I keep noticing mistakes in books and movies and I wonder how many fake perceptions I have of other groups because of books I read.
shaya_getzl
I think movies make a point to keep distance between reality.

You may have a point there. Law & Order tends to mimic real life cases on occasion but puts in significant differences. Although in this case I think it was ignorance.
shaya_getzl
I think that since they filmed in KJ, it's obvious that they were in contact with the locals and if they wanted to, they could hire a consultant for next to nothing who would detail everything to match real life; they chose not to.
motcha
BTW, the cop who said "based on the little Yiddish I remember..." is actually Jewish and proud of it. His name is Belzer.

Did you notice in Bourne Identity, Ludlum referred to an individual as a "chassidim"?

Actually it makes plenty sense that the characters on the show got their fact wrong about chassidim. Ask any non-frum (or even frum) Jew to describe what life in KJ is like any see if you don't get the exact same response.

I love how the Rebbe is teaching the young students while they sit around him in a circle on the grass. wub.gif

Oh, and how the chassidish cop calls his rebbe for advice on what to do with the cops. Halevai. Lol.

Did you notice how one of the "chasidish" ladies has a slit in her skirt?

What teffilah were they davening, mincha?

And the most implausible thing was that the police came and "arrested" the Rebbe - just 2 cops - in a room full of hundreds of chassidim and nobody beat up the cops!

I just listened again and apologize. It did say that, you're right Pinchas. No cell phones? I've never seen as many cell phones as on frum Jews. Kosher ones only, of course.

It happens to be one of the writers for SVU is a frum jew (At least he used to be) I'm close to his daughter and son in law. He mostly writes for CSI Miami but did a few episodes for SVU.

I suggested he write an episode based on Monsey but he says its to risky and they have had requests from rabbis not to write.
