I was raised in a non-religious Jewish household. I recently decided that I want to learn more about my religion. I attend services at a nearby Conservative Synogogue that I really like. It is a small congregation and the Rabbi is great. I am spending time and money buying books and checking books out of the library.
My question is, does anyone have any books they can recommend to me? I have "To pray as a Jew", that I recently purchased and it has some good info in it. I am past the age to learn Hebrew (63), but I want to learn more about prayers, etc. Any ideas, anyone? Nerfmom

Firstly, welcome!

Secondly, most of the people on this board are Orthodox, so if you're looking for help with learning about the Conservative idea, you might be in the wrong place for that.

But welcome nevertheless. wavey.gif

I see you're interested in prayer. What is included in the etc.? Shabbos, festivals, kosher food, Israel, something else?

Welcome and all, however I'd like to make you aware of something. This board made up of people who are neck deep in Judaism one way or another. It's not meant to be inspirational. Sure we talk about Jewish life a lot, but we often gripe about the hard parts. I wouldn't want you to get turned off simply because you got the wrong idea. It's really cool to have you on board though.

If you have any specific questions, I'd love to hear.

Welcome. I myself am Conservative and was thinking that you might find some good book resources on the Conservative movement's website, so I went there and found that they have a book service organized by a number of categories. I have provided a link below to the books they have in the category of Prayer and Holidays (scroll down to see the complete list), but you can also view other book categories by clicking on the drop-down menu at the top of the screen.

Welcome to h.com.

Though you are, and always have been, Jewish, you may enjoy this book about a Methodist minister who converted to Judaism at a late age and now teaches Judaic Studies at the University of Massachusetts.

Welcome and enjoy!

I don't have any suggestions as to books etc. I congratulate you and wish you well on your quest for spiritual enlightenment, but I am just going to welcome you as an member of the older generation. Most people on this board are young. Are you a mother/grandmother or am I completely off beam? By the way I don't agree that there is an age beyond which you can't learn Hebrew. I am a few years younger than you but have learned so much as an older woman so I'm sure you can too, if you really want to.
