Before or after Matan Torah? Do the mefarshim discuss the exact dates that he came?
Also I'm wondering when exactly was milchemes amelek - how soon after krias yam suf?

I was just reading a thing about this actually. Well not really. But the author was discussing how when Moshe discovered the burning bush it was after chasing a sheep. Sheep don't travel more than a day or two away, so the makom of har sinai was only a day or two away from Yisro's house.

its a machlokes
rashi brings it down in parsha yisro
its like right after sheni - when he's talking about judgin the people - cuz that was after matan torah or they wouldnt be judging - so its not chronological - but look in the rashi

Good question. The best I can come up with is the last week of Iyyar. [Keri'at Yam Suf of course was 21 Nissan, the seventh day of pesach, so a little more than a month later]. I say that because stop 7 was Alush, stop 8 was Rephidim, and stop 9 was Midbar Sinai, and they left Alush on 23 Iyyar and came to Midbar Sinai on Rosh Chodesh Sivan, so I'm figuring they were at Rephidim and attacked by Amaleik during the last week of Iyyar.

That does make sense. Thank you. If that's the case, you would surmise that Yisro came after matan torah?

Why? I don't see what one thing [the date of Amaleik's attack] has to do with the other [the date of Yitro's arrival]. Isn't the date of Yitro's arrival a machloket if it occurred before or after matan torah?
