In the absence of Internet, how would a mother with a child with 102 degrees fever decide what to do?
Call her doctor. Ask a friend who has had many children. Follow her instinct. Whatever she wants, as long as she doesn't blindly follow the advice of strangers.

A fever of 102 degrees is in itself no reason to bring a child (except perhaps an infant) to the doctor, period.

Right. That's if you don't mind him having a nicely-fried brain. Human beings (children especially) cannot tolerate a brain temp over 103º for long. Once you're in that zone there's very real danger! A 102º fever that's been there for a few days is dangerous too; there's only so long the brain can survive healthy and intact for. With you around there's going to have to be a disclaimer, in red, inch-high, neon letters pinned to every post in this forum methinks

Thank you both for illustrating my point.
