Full Version: Question About The Conversion Process In New York

Kacha HaChayim
I've got an acquaintance who "converted" through Conservative Judaism years ago but has decided that he just couldn't live with the hypocrisy (his words) of the movement's theology and that he was going to go all the way and convert properly following Halacha.

He shot me an email about this yesterday, and he was asking me about where he should go for a proper conversion (recognized by the Israeli Rabbinate) in New York, and was a bit at loss as to where to proceed since he just moved there and doesn't really know anyone. He first thought of approaching the RCA, but read that their conversions were generally checked up by the Rabbinate and not always considered up to par...

I've never inquired about these things, so are there H.com members who could give me a hand and help me direct him in the right direction?

I'd suggest that he contact the Vaad harabonim of Queens, and explain his situation and ask to be referred to a rabbi who supervises conversions under the auspices of the Vaad.

If he's in a different neighborhood, they might refer him to a similar organization in that neighborhood, or perhaps they could refer him to a rabbi in his neighborhood but still have the Queens Vaad serve as the supervisory beit din.

Have him contact Eternal Jewish Family; they'll probably be able to pair him with a mentor and the beis din they work with is on the short list of Rabbinate acceptables.

Whoa. Why doesn't he concentrate on sincerely following what he believes in instead of worrying about other people in his community and their
 hypocrisy?

Well, some top basketball players were offered Reform-style express, no strings attached conversions by the Israeli Rabbinate, so I'd say play some hoops and you're home-free.

Ironic and sad...
