I like to make soups several times a week, typically they are paerve or milchig. I feel like I need a little extra something on the side to make it a whole meal, like breadsticks. Does anyone have a good recipe or idea?

How about dressed-up grilled cheese sandwiches or paninis?

I would make rolls. If you have a breadmaker, I can send you a super-easy recipe.

Nothing like fresh bread and hot soup wub.gif

Or get some pizza dough- you could make garlic knots.

Yeah, I like grilled cheese or just a toasted bagel with my soup.

How about garlic bread or those sandwiches with tortilla and melted cheese.
All the ideas sound yummy.

It's a meal but not super fillilng. When m y bread machine was new, we used to hve soup and bread night, and it got really old, really fast.

It also depends on what you've had for lunch.

I have a mushroom barley soup on the stove. Nothing like soup on a snowy day.

That's really yummy but I haven't seen a place where you can buy them.

You don't have to buy davka bread bowls; small sourdough loafs work quite well. Slice off the top, scoop out the yummy insides (for dipping) and pour in soup.

If they sell whole wheat versions I'm sold. wub.gif

Any bread with a thick, crispy crust will work (though I think sourdough just goes so well with soup dreamin.gif)

people (i mean couples) really have meals that consist of only soup?

I was wondering the same thing. There had better be an entire side of beef in that pot if you intend to call it the main course....

My hubby is out of town so it's just me. If he was here, he'd probably prefer a fleishig soup that was hearty such as beef with barley or stew. Tortilla chicken soup is also a popular choice. I made a paerve version with extra black beans and smoky corn chowder, because I prefer milchigs. What's strange about soup for dinner?

And for the record, soup is my favorite food so it doesn't get old to me as long as I make a selection of soup.

Unfortunately, soup was one of the many things that Hubby informed me were not complete meals. Others included salads, quiches, and french fries.

That makes sense. Quiche AND salad make a great meal!

That makes sense - all of those are sides. I don't think you need to necessarily have a meat entree, but there needs to be SOMETHING else. French fries?? Those are nosh-until-dinner-comes. I can't even think what to pair quiche with to make it a complete meal...

(Even salads with chicken IMHO, are not complete meals.)

Quiche and salad is YOUR idea of great first-courses? Sometimes, I don't think I know you at all... bigcry.gif

It obviously depends on the quiche and the salad.....

I like quiche as long as it doesn't have broccoli, cauliflower or mushrooms...
And a proper Caesar salad can certainly enhance a meal...

nothing at all, it's just as most men probably don't consider it alone as a meal. but, hey, if your husband does, it's great!!! i often eat only soup for supper.
ice blue
Add croutons to the soup. Lots and lots of them, and sliced veggies on the side.

I ended up going to Trader Joes and buying some of their fresh whole wheat pizza dough and shaping them into breadsticks and baking them. They were the perfect addition.

Quiche and salad for a first course?! I don't have time to make courses like that, I get home at 6pm and we just want to eat. Quiche isn't exactly quick to make, and then something on top of that for a main course... I can't imagine doing something like that if it wasn't Shabbos.
Kalashnikover_Rebbe
Quiche is just a fancy French name for Kugel. And no one would serve kugel as a main course.....
