The same could be said about most shiduchim....
Why did they match up people so different they wouldn't even consider actually going out once their identities were revealed?

most? i disagree.
in any case, i would think they would pair people up, based on some common qualities/list/whatever, so that they WOULD go out in the end, and not view it as a joke, when she is 40 y. old and he is 20something
