Do you have a code that you have set up with your spouse to let each other know when one of you wants to leave someone's house after a meal? Or, a code to signal that you try to encourage guests to leave?

If you don't, do you think it would be a good idea to develop one?

Yes. I fall asleep at the table. This is not so much a code per se as a natural occurence.

I blame it on the baby.

"Honey, the baby is getting fussy, we should probably go."

"Honey, it's almost bedtime, if we don't get home, we'll have a terror on our hands."

"Honey, the baby hasn't had his nap."

To get guests to leave, it usually isn't such a problem. If I'm exhausted, I have no problem announcing it and heading off to bed.

Just this morning I was interviewing a babysitter who i liked but my husband didn't. I was still sitting and chatting with her and he got up to do something and made the "wrap it up" finger twirl to me behind her.
We are rarely on the same page when it comes to leaving a host's house...I think it is important to have a signal. But I'm usually so in tune with him that I can tell from his body language when he wants to leave (now whether I go along with it is a different story)

We have a "look."

What if your kid is not fussy (it's asleep or something)?

I think there should be three signals - 1) Let's go 2) No, I don't want to, and 3) I hear that you don't want to, but I really do so let's go now.
