We have to accept a ta'anit the day before. According to Rav, we can do that any time during minchah time the previous afternoon. According to Shmuel you have to do it davka during tefillat minchah. The Rambam paskens like Shmuel, and the Raavad like Rav.

Aren't there normally rules for that? Don't we normally pasken like Rav? Are there other examples where a Rishon paskens like Shmuel and not like Rav?

This post by joshman http://www.hashkafah.com/index.php?s=&...st&p=984512 reminded me to check my facts. I looked in the Mavo La-talmud at the back of Berachot and it says the general rule is we pasken like Rav be-isurei, and like Shemuel be-dinei.
