There seems to be a common perception that we can get up before the fast and eat till alot ha-shachar [let's call it 72 minutes before haneit ha-chamah]. Is that really correct? Isn't it that we are allowed to continue eating till alot ha-shachar but we must start 30 minutes earlier if it's mezonot?

Don't you also have to make a "tanai" before you go to sleep that you are NOT mekabel the fast and plan to eat when you wake up???
