A German client has sent a letter that is signed by two people.

Above a man's signature is "i.V." and above a woman's signature is "i.A."

What do those designations mean?

I'm guessing that "i.V." stands for "isn't Voman" and "i.A." stands for "is A voman".

in Vollmacht = with full authority OR in Vertretung = as proxy
im Auftrag (von) = on behalf (of)

you'll probably want to check a legal dictionary for the technical meanings.

Since it's a legal document I assume the first is 'in Vollmacht' (power of attorney) and the latter is 'in Auftrag' (as instructed).
