A vicious-looking dog is running towards you on Shabbos. Someone is driving by, rolls down their window, and tells you to jump in. Are you allowed to?
Bezalel99
No. Throw a steak through the open car window.

You mean hachnasah, because I'm talking about moving a steak from a reshut harabim (the street) to a reshut hayachid (the car). [Would I also be moving the dog?] But of course I assumed an eruv and that the car wouldn't be leaving the eruv.
israeli4ever
my bad... but does the eruv help?
and i the goyopens the car door for you, there is no actual chillul shabbos involved in getting in...)

The weight of the passenger would make the car's engine work harder? And ma'aris ayin?

You mean for those people who can only see people and not dogs?

At some point the car will outrun the dog, and then people may see the frum Yid in the car but not the dog chasing him.

My original post on this thread was meant to be dumb, by the way, but since people are taking me seriously, I thought I'd go with it. (After all, how many people walk around carrying a steak? Plus, it would be cruel to reward a stranger's kindness by luring a dangerous dog into his car.)

No. How much do you want to bet it's his dog?

This was supposed to be a serious question! When I was walking to shul yesterday, there were some dogs barking very loudly and I was pondering what I would do if one of those dogs would come at me. The only means of escape I could think of were the cars driving by.

Yeah, I was wondering if a recent experience with dogs had prompted your question. Glad to hear you survived the experience. smile.gif

smile.gif Thank you. They were actually safely behind the fence, but had they not been, I don't think we'd be having this conversation.

I know exactly how you feel, having been in that scenario more than once myself. That's why I expressly looked for a dog free building to live in.

If you had yiras shamayim, the dogs wouldn't bother you....

Dogs bark, it's what they do. Did they give any indication that they would "come at" you, given the chance?

Had that happened on the way back from shul when I was in college. It was about midnight Friday night, no one on the streets, suddenly these 2 huge dogs come running at us at full speed. My friend and I just froze figuring we are safest if we don't move. The dogs got within a few yards of us, then suddenly stopped and turned around and ran off.

We then went to the police station several blocks away and reported these stray dogs.

It was quite scary.

Keep in mind that some dogs are all bark and no bite.

True, but there is only ONE way to find out....

I almost got bit in the ###### by a dog a few weeks ago on Shabbos. Someone warned me literally at the last second......
