Full Version: Tourist Trap

What places have you been to that you consider to be a tourist trap. By tourist trap, I mean an area that is geared for tourists and therefore everything is way overpriced.

For example downtown Baltimore is the biggest tourist trap I've seen. Parking is over $20 for just a few hours, the area is relatively small. And there really isn't much unique about the area. The aquarium and science center are way overpriced. For a sunday with your spouse and kids, it will probably cost you over $100 without even thinking about food.

Any other examples?

disney!

Most people that I've spoken to who have been to Disney loved it and wished they could go back sometime. When I say trap, I mean places that were totally not worth it + seemingly intentionally overpriced. Was Disney not fun in your opinion?

i agree with the disney suggestion, and every other theme park, for that matter.

sure you go and have fun, but do they really have to charge $3/soda? what's the price of admission these days - close to $70? disney is literally a place created for you to go and just spill the entire contents of your wallet into their giant pot.

They actually charge you more just for thinking about food? How do they know, do they ask what you are thinking about? That's mean.

I loved Disney, but like Spot said they want you to open your wallet and dump it all out.
Example- They have hotels where they shuttle bus you to the parks, Disney PR says "you dont need to rent a car!" What they mean is: You are stuck on our property, and will not be spending money at other theme parks. They even have Downtown Disney nightclubs on Disney property so adults have something to do after the parks close.
Every ride exit dumps you into a gift shop. They take your picture on the ride, which you can pay $20 to own. They have wandering photographers and people selling balloons.
A one day ticket for an adult is around $70, if you want a park hopper ticket, its even more. Add 2 meals and a few sodas.... and per person thats 100 easy for a day.

How about "South of the Border" ?

Just a general thought on tourist traps: I've been to places that were so untourist friendly that there were no tourist traps in which to buy cheesy branded merchandise to bring back as souvenirs for people. I find this very frustrating.

No! NYC is worth every cent.

niagara falls. the falls are beautiful but there is a myriad of tourist "attractions": haunted houses, magic shows, bad wax museums, 3d movies....overpriced and low quality
