Has all of Lakewood suddenly gone Goth? (Or maybe I was unaware of a more gradual process, but) at a chassunah recently where there was only food on the women's side (an issue for another topic), I ventured over to get a bite to eat and saw a sea of black. Yup, the b&w trend long popular with the boys has taken hold across the mechitza!

yeah, I was just looking at the ivris-ivrit thread and thinking, didn't I just post something? where'd it go? and reposted it there.

When was the last time, before this one, you were at a simcha in Lakewood?

It's official. Lakewooders are deranged.

Is that the latest takanah?

Maybe the food on the ladies side was for invited guests but the hosts couldn't afford to feed a whole host of yeshiva bachurim? Just venturing a guess. (Although, at the last CH wedding I was at, there was no dessert on the men's side.)

Actually I was told that 'Brown is the new black' and at the past few RW chasunahs I was at, there was about 50/50 black/brown, in my opinion.

If you think that, you don't understand me at all. Or you don't realize the true mehus of Lakewood.....
It's as if they took all the stringencies of Yiddishkeit, but eliminated all of the good or "fun" parts... Being Jewish in Lakewood is a burden, not a zechus. There's no simchas hachayim, and no joy in Avodas Hashem (let alone life itself)....

Anything taken TOO far to the extreme is bad...

it was discussed many times here already.

1. re: simcha wear - it's not only lakewood. thank G-d, at least white and black is in style now, cause before everyone ws dressed only on black.

2. what do you mean the food was only on the women's side? shmorgesboard? or the men were not served the seuda?

This isn't anything new... I have a couple thoughts on the matter:

1. It's winter now. People wear dark colors.

2. Black is classy, which works for a wedding.

3. Dark colors are slimming. Girls are obsessed with their figures.

4. Black is "safe" and not obvious. Some people just aren't daring enough to try something else.

5. Black may not be "in", but it's never really "out". Another reason why some people would be more comfortable choosing it.

Why the plural "colors"? Pitch black, Jet black, ebony, Charcoal black and Registration black don't qualify as separate colors.

The slimming effect of black is very overrated. If you're 80 pounds overweight, black is not going to slim you down. (I've seen frum women who seem to be trying to pull that one off)

Black works on everyone, while a specific color might not. A pale person might look really washed out in light colors, etc etc. That being said, I have a pure green party dress. Whenever I wear it, people actually tell me how refreshing it is, and how brave I am to wear non-black. biggrin.gif

Black does not work on everyone! It can make some complexions look very pale and drawn.

I was speaking of the general darker colors and wasn't refering specificaly to black, and yeah, a 300 lb woman won't look slim no matter what color she wears but could you picture her in light pink?? :puke:

To echo other sentiments, black at simchas on women is nothing new.

Remember, black has a certain cachet- the infamous 'little black dress', a black cocktail dress, etc.
Pure Myrrh
I find it funny that black is so accepted being that among western culture, black is considered one of the "sexy" colors, along with red (duh) and white.

Except that everyone who says it is wrong. Black at simchas is new, not more than 5 years old or so. Before that you deliberately didn't wear black to wedding. Go back and look at pictures of wedding from 10, 15 years ago and you'll see colors galore. I'm going to look on onlysimchas.com to find some pictures.
Goldfish
Forget onlysimchas. Their search function doesn't work properly. You search by year, it gives you, let's say, 100 results, but when you click to go to the next page it goes to the current year instead of the one you chose.

I don't like their new design -- it's too cluttered.

Prevalent as a NY night-time simcha look.

Remember seasons, too. I believe you'll probably see more color in the spring/summer.

Just by the way my observation is that black [and its variation of black and white] is fast becoming the norm among the MO as well - whether it's at shul or a simchah or whatever, it's a sea of black with a few colors bobbing in the waves. Sliding to the Right.

Sorry if that came across as mean. I'm just saying it would not be flattering. I've got absoloutly nothing against overweight people. And JFTR, I have no clue how much 300 lbs is -I just threw out a random number that sounded big, but sorry if I offended anyone in that weight range.

I'm not in that weight range (and never have been), but I know people who are, and it's actually a bit of a paradox. Because they are so big, things looks better on them than they would on thinner people. It's the thin person who needs to wear black to hide flaws (because who's got a perfect figure?). But a person that fat cannot hide anything. If they wear a nice outfit, they look nice. Fat, but nice.

And the colors must be flattering to their skin tones, just like a thin person. Maybe neon green wouldn't look good on a fat person (my eyes!), but it wouldn't look good on a thin person either.

Black is also cheaper since it all matches-- i.e. you can have several skirts and tops and mix and match and several skirts and tops then translates into more than several outfits. And they match your shoes perfectly without having to get new shoes. It costs more to coordinate colors-- then you have to get shoes, bag, possibly a hat or headband, for each outfit.

Also, black doesn't get noticeably dirty as easily, which is a plus for women with little kids.

I know someone whose cleaning lady thought that frum women were only allowed to wear black. smile.gif

Who said I was open-minded?

You want to dislike something, that is your opinion and you are free to express it. But when you say that a fat person wearing pink makes you feel like puking, that's beyond personal opinion and becomes, more or less, an ad hominem attack. That is not mentchlich.

Labelling someone a Mean Girl is one of the most insulting thing you can say. I was deeply offended when you called me that, which is why i was so quick to defend myself. Perhaps you can choose another insult to use when you think someone isn't being nice. I happen to think greentiger is a really nice person, perhaps she didn't express herself well. Or perhaps she didn't mean it the way you thought, which was the case.

If people wear black only because it's slimming, looks good, they like it, and it goes with everything, and all those other wonderful reasons, why is it that you only see a sea of black at frum occasions?

I think one needs to differentiate between women dressing all in black for reasons of style and for reasons of religious conviction. Granted, sometimes we don't really know ourselves, and sometimes the lines are blurred such as when we do it for reasons of style but the style came about or is reinforced by religious conviction.
