Full Version: Tipping Maître de

When I was young, a cousin would come to visit our family and take us out to a restaurant. Invariably, the maître de would tell him that he needed a reservation (or maybe only that there would be a long wait without one), and he would pull out some money and give it to the man, and we would soon be seated at a big table.

What's the halacha on that? Is that stealing someone else's position in line? If so, are both parties chayav?

I don't see what the problem is. It is a restaurant, not a public government office. If the owners/employees of the establishment wish to provide expedited service for those who pay for it, I don't see the problem. Everyone else in line could have done the same thing....

I don't understand why this is a halachic sheiloh...
In New York, if you don't tip the maître de, you'll have a hard time making it into any really good restaurants. But then again, people who are interested in making it into good restaurants are obviously eating fish/pasta/salad there, so the sheiloh is only relevant for sinners, no?

Let's say that an SDJ and I go to a conservatory which is having three musical performances in different rooms. The one that I am most interested in was advertised, "Free tickets available beginning Feb. 13th; hurry because they will go quickly. If you show up at the performance without a ticket, there might possibly be a chance that you can still get in." For the other two performances, they say, "You don't need a ticket; just show up."

If I go to the more desirable performance, and the doorman says that it's impossible to admit us without tickets, would you try to slip him a $20 to see if he could then locate a couple of extra seats?

I certainly would.
(Then again, having grown up in Miami, Cuba Fl and having lived in other parts of Latin America some of the corruption mentality might have rubbed off on me...)

SDJ? Sinner Demographic Jew?

Would that be more likely to turn off a date, or turn her on (l'havdil)?

How about that. I grew up in South Beach (before it was trendy).

Someone with thousands of posts on H.com must know that SDJ = shidduch de jour.

I don't know the letter of the law on this one but it is definitely wrong, and not yashar.

I get why you think it's wrong, but why isn't it yashar? They went straight to the head of the line.

You're right, I was hasty to judge. Whoops.
