Zev Brenner is a rabbi?

Thanks for posting the article.

"Assemblyman Hikind said he planned to meet with the rabbis involved. “Suddenly, when it comes to faith in the rabbis, there is this big question mark,” he said. “And when you don’t explain to the young people, you lose them, plain and simple.” "

The Gedolim have managed to shift the contrversy from the concert on to themselves.

maybe if your thread was more informative you would have gotten responses. How is anyone supposed to know what concert you were talking about?

From the NYT article:

"...In late February, the two men, Asher Friedman and Rabbi Avraham Shor, demanded that the concert be canceled. Using the text of an edict that had been used to ban a concert in Israel, they warned that the concert would “strip the youth of every shred of fear of heaven.” They said they were acting on behalf of a group of Israeli rabbis, and ultimately, 33 American rabbis signed the edict....."

Is this the way the so-called OPS operates?
If so, it ain't pretty.

I saw a wonderful book called "The Torah Isn't Hefker", or something like that, in a house where I was babysitting.

What did it say?

It was about modern music and how it's a bad influence on society.

The ban says that by introducing frum boys to secular melodies set to Torah-themeed verses, their minds will be polluted. But isn't it a time-honored tradition to take secular melodies and make niggunim and zemiros out of them? Or is it just a Chabad thing?

As a parent, I don't let my children listen to the lastest Lipa Shmeltzer songs because he blurred the line between jewish music and non-jewish music.
I think it's wonderful that he took upon himself not to sing these songs anymore..but the damage (so to speak) is already done and it will take a while for him to prove himself.
Regarding the article in the Times:
1-Zev Brenner is a talk show host..not a Rabbi.
2-If some of the rabbonim regret signing without being sure what they are signing for..why don't they print a retraction? People's livelihoods and reputations are at stake here.
3-I find it a bit interesting that Dov Hikind would get involved.
4-It's not that big a deal with the general public as they are making it out to be. It is between the people involved in the production of the concert.

What do you mean it's not a big deal? This was supposed to be a very large, well-publicized concert. The rabbonim are saying that public concerts are not appropriate for Jewish youth. Of course the public has a huge stake in the outcome of all this. I mean, who is the market for Jewish/chassidic music?

True. However, the public isn't so outraged at the cancellation of this particular concert (as the writer makes it out to be).

The other thing is that people have a tayvah for music [just look at the threads during sefirah when people mamish sunny.gif can't cope] and if you ban "wholesome" outlets then people are just going to go to totally inappropriate venues.

How do you know? I'm sure all the people who paid for tickets are outraged.

So, you're saying that people who bought tickets to go (and obviously wanted to go), don't care that the concert was canceled? That doesn't make any sense. If they didn't care then why were they going in the first place?

Exactly, this will only have an effect on the few "Chassidic" artists who actually care what the OPS has to say. They won't make concerts, but other artists who the OPS already likes even less will continue and their popularity will increase exponentially.... They are shooting themselves in the foot......
