Note that for all the organic design [It's the Bilboa Guggenheim], the window panes themselves are still individually straight. Are there examples of architecture that include three dimensional glass windows?

Ugh, Gehry.

I don't mind the IAC building in Chelsea, though.

The glass isn't 3-d or curving, the window frames are.

I've always wanted to see the Bilboa Guggenheim in person.{sigh}

Did you happen to catch the Frank Gehry exhibit at the Art Gallery of Ontario in 2006? I thought it was rather interesting.

People, it's Bilbao.

That's too bad, I think you would have really enjoyed it.

hmmm...maybe. But I was pissed at the OGA when I took my little one and most of the stuff was closed because of the impending renovations and I haven't been back since.

Have you been to the Royal Ontario Museum since they opened Daniel Libeskind's Michael Lee-Chin Crystal? It's really cool, in my opinion. It's like the 21st century CE is exploding out of the early 20th. The irony being that it houses the dinosaur exhibit primarily.

Yeah, the AGO was under construction when I went to the exhibit and we had to enter through a side entrance, but we did manage to go to a couple of the regular galleries in addition to the Gehry exhibit.

Unfortunately I haven't had a chance yet, but I plan to on one of my next visits. I have seen it from the street though and while it is impressive I'm not sure that I can say I'm a big fan.

I can definitely appreciate what they've done from an architectual standpoint, but would personally have preferred them as two separate buildings, not one jutting out from the other, or at least a smaller version of the crystal jutting out from the old building. As it stands, I think it's a bit of a monstrosity on Bloor W [something I am not alone in thinking, hence my quote from the Torontoist article you posted] which is a shame since the old ROM was a beautiful building.

Seriously though...I think it looks really cool having the dinosaur exhibit in front of the crystal. Definitely much better than the dark area of the old building where the dinosaur exhibit used to be.

The ROM building is still a beautiful building and they have preserved it. Don't forget they didn't touch the front facade, only the side facade on the north side, which didn't have an entry previously - they kept the expansion to the side of the building, and even preserved the original walls internally.
I'm glad they didn't put up yet another square box. True, the crystal isn't in the same proto-art deco style as the original building, but it challenges that art deco style rather than destroying it.

To clarify, do you mean that the actual piece of glass is three dimensional or do you mean that the window is framed in such a way as to delineate a 3d shape?

The former.

That's true, the front of the building still looks beautiful, it's the side of the building that hurts my eyes. I actually do like the design of the crystal as a stand alone building, I just don't like it together with the current ROM building. That said, it's clear from your furniture threads that your taste runs much more modern than mine, so I'm not surprised that we see this differently.

Hmm. I'll have to think more about it.
