I have so many questions about this topic. I'll stick to one for now.

Why is it that many women wear nice sheitels on shabbos and to simchas -- but they wear snoods at other times?

A sheitel takes the same amount of time to put on as a snood, and it looks nicer than a snood even if you don't have time to wash/brush it.

No, it doesn't. A sheitel takes longer. You can't just plop it on your head.

It's also more uncomfortable, hotter, and more expensive to maintain.

yes you can. stick it on, walk to the mirror, move it around, and voila.

maybe but at least you look half-decent.
greentiger
Snoods are typically more comfortable. Something like slippers vs shoes.

Ok, but you asked why, and that's a big reason.

They do look more decent, but can be uncomfortable/annoying/hot/incredibly annoying because it's not MY HAIR!!!

Maybe your wife can do that, but it's not typical. You first have to arrange your hair, put in the combs, settle it, brush it, etc.

In your opinion. Some snoods (like the velour ones) look really bad, but there are plenty of nice ones. I saw a woman wearing a snood to her son's wedding and she looked extremely elegant.
Spiffy
For me, putting on a sheitel means arranging my hair a certain way, then putting it on, clipping it, and making sure it looks ok. The clips hurt me, and certainly after hours of wear it gets really uncomfortable. I happen to not wear snoods, I always feel a bit like a smurf in one. Some people can pull it off, though.

Do you walk around in public in slippers? And I thought you are supposed to look like a princess when you dress or somesuch?

Jean skirts = too casual, but snoods, which are like slippers, are okay?!

you're right, i think it depends on how long the hair is.

true, there are some elegant ones, and some women can pull it off, but that's rare.
Bluelaptop
What are you including in the snood category? Actual snoods shouldn't be worn out imo
BroadwayFreak
It takes such a long time for me to put on a sheitel, and it's always much more uncomfortable than a snood. Not that I wear a snood, but I tried them on a few times and they're definitely more comfy. However, I hate how they look.

Wouldn't pulling it off defeat the whole purpose?

According to many, snoods are better than wigs.

If the goal is to be elegant as a princess al pi R'Falk, then wigs are better. If the goal is to cover up more to look less attractive, then snoods are better.
Shemmy
The purpose of a woman covering her hair after marriage has nothing to do with "looking like a princess" or looking less attractive. For whatever reason, hazal decided that a married woman's hair is erwa. Thus, it needs to be covered. Wigs, according to German and Sephardic poske din, don't properly satisfy that requirement. In this case, snoods, hats, scarves, hijabs, etc are inherently superior to wigs.

not at all. it takes muuuch longer to put on a shaitel than a snood, and, of course, the snood is more comfortable, not to mention the more you wear a sheitel, the more often you have to wash/style it (that's why i don't wear my full sheitel every day to work, although i look better in it than in the fall)

Why dont you wear a suit every day? It takes the same amount of time as putting on a pair of jeans, but it looks much nicer.

The husbands of most snood-wearing women do wear suits every day. but a good point, assuming it is indeed such a pain to wear a sheitel (which seems to vary by woman.). Also, jeans don't make one look bad or unkempt, which can't be said for snoods.
Shemmy
I didn't know that snoods make one look unkempt.

as if they can wear jeans wink.gif but the better example might be "wearing mismatched pants and jacket as opposed to a suit" tongue.gif

agent220
I don't think that's true....I wear snoods or tichels on weekdays, and my husband most definitely does not wear a suit on weekdays.
I am not too lazy to put on a sheitel. I prefer to keep mine for Shabbos so I can dress up then, and be comfortable and practical during the week when I'm running errands, cooking, playing with the kids, etc.

Perhaps you should try wearing a sheitel for a couple of days. Then you will understand.

Also you don't always want hair in your face all day!

I hate to sound dumb, but does "snood" mean strictly the yeshivish-looking, chenille type of headcovering? Or does "snood" also indicate israeli scarve-tichel thingies, and all other hair coverings?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snood_%28headgear%29
QUOTE
A snood is a type of headgear, worn by women over their long hair. In the most common modern form it resembles a close-fitting hood worn over the back of the head. The band covers the forehead or crown of the head, goes behind the ears and under the nape of the neck. A sack of sorts dangles from this band, covering and containing the fall of long hair gathered at the back of the head. A snood is sometimes made of solid cloth, but sometimes of loosely knitted yarn, or other net-like material.

The word is first recorded in Old English from around 725 (OED) and was widely used in the Middle Ages for a variety of cloth or net head coverings, including what we would today call hairbands and cauls, as well as versions similar to a modern net snood. Snoods continued in use in later periods especially for women working or at home.

I am speaking of the yeshivish looking snood. Israeli thingies are much nicer.

I didn't know that snood is a regular English word until I went to Fort Henry one summer and the "teacher" in the school room http://www.parks.on.ca/fort/tour17.htm said they had to wear snoods back then.

I think snoods are horrid-looking. I don't own one, and I can't stand the idea of women wearing them out-of-doors. Israeli scarves (that's what I call htem) are really beautiful and actually make women look attractive. I go out in my israeli scarf very often, but I'd never leave in a regular bandana, pre-tied bandana, or "snood". To me, it's like leaving the house in a robe.

I think bandanas are nice too.

They're A LOT better than snoods, but I still associate the look with a homey look, like a robe, as I said. Somehow to me, scarves go over alot better to wear outdoors.

Order of attractiveness:

1) Scarves

2) Bandanas

3) Sheitels/"dressier" hats

4) Baseball caps

5) Weird Israeli tichels that are so big it looks like the woman is wearing a fancy tablecloth

6) Snoods

Not bad, although I'd tweak it a bit.

But do you really find snoods attractive, even as a 6?
agent220
Not all snoods are created equal. Just saying. Some look horrid (on me especially), while others I think actually make me look good. I actually like the way I look in certain snoods.
Very Lucky Guy
Not really, that's why they're at the bottom. The thing is, like anything I am sure you can find some women who look good in some type of snood. Just like some women would not be able to pull off wearing a scarf.

I wouldn't automatically say a woman will be bad looking in a snood, but they are not likely to.

True. But even if a woman looks good in a snood, it's my personal opinion that it's something to be worn at home, like slippers or a robe.

On average. Some shaitels are very nice and some aren't. I don't agree with moshi about nearly 100% looking great. I think it is closer to 60-40.

Better than her hair when it's all smushed up under something, sure. Better than her hair when it's properly styled? No way. My sheitels are in no way nicer than my real hair, when my hair is styled.

I suspect #5 is referring to the women who make elaborate head sculptures out of mass quantities of scarves so that you wonder how exactly their neck is supporting it all.

I don't agree. Maybe if you live in a very affluent neighborhood in which the women buy thousand dollar wigs. Generally, I think the woman's real hair will be better than your average sheital.
