Full Version: Another Purim Question

I know of a shul that offers MM through the shul. Basically, you give them some money and then check off the names of members you want to give to (or give to everyone for a discounted rate). The shul puts together baskets for all the member families and adds the names of people who gave for that member to the card.

It seems like a decent fundraiser (ok, actually, I have some serious problems with it but I can see how it would raise money) but not in the spirit of Purim. What do y'all think?

No. I'm not that inclusive.

i like this system. the school used to do something similar as well, but their thing was that you got a basket only if 5 or more families chose your name, otherwise you just got a card.
1) it's a great fundraiser
2) it helps you cut costs while helping the school/shul (i.e., instead of making 20 MM, you only have to make 5 because the rest are going through the school/shul)
3) less hassle running around on purim day

What's the problem??? The mitzvah is to SEND 2 items of food to someone.
Themes, baskets and intense planning starting immediately after Chanukkah are not part of the mitzvah....

don't forget that i'm from the south. y'all is already plural.

What about those who recieve baskets with very few names? Why cant there just be one large fund for everyone to recieve the same thing?

And best of all, if 25 people were all going to send you MM, you only get 1/25ths of the amount of junk.

Don't you know anything? You're supposed to "regift" all the stuff you don't like, and hope it doesn't eventually get back to the person who gave it to you.....

I thought EVERY shul and yeshiva did this. huh.gif

I think if it helps the institution make money, go for it.

I wasn't going to go into my issues with this system but here it goes:

1. It becomes a huge popularity contest.
2. There is pressure on families to go through the shul because people will notice if their name is missing.
3. It becomes a huge popularity contest.
4. You can't send to anyone not on the list.
5. It becomes a huge popularity contest.

Correct.

"Y'all" is plural as in "What do y'all think?" or "I really like y'all's new kitchen decor."

"All y'all" is also plural but emphasizes an inclusiveness.

So, "Y'all are sinners" corresponds to "You (pl.) are sinners." but "All y'all are sinners." corresponds to "Each and every one of you from the the tiniest babe in arms to the oldest crone are utter and complete sinners."
