It's not a requirement, but I wouldn't call it a "chumra" either. It is mitzva min hamuvchar......

So how did the "two brachos" myth come about? Just something that caught on and became received knowledge?

Probably the same way that the myth that we don't eat giraffe because we don't know where to shecht it came about.
